River Cruise: Frankfurt to Basel

OCTOBER 1 - 7, 2026

OCTOBER 1 - 7, 2026

Step aboard an unforgettable journey through the heart of Europe on Detours’ newest European river cruise. Launching in 2026, this brand-new ship sets the stage for a stunning autumn voyage along the Rhine. Our adventure begins in Frankfurt, with the option to kick things off in a big way by adding a festive pre-trip in Munich for Oktoberfest. From there, we sail south through storybook towns and legendary wine regions, stopping in Mainz, Heidelberg, Baden-Baden, Strasbourg, and Breisach before concluding in the charming Swiss city of Basel. With vineyards glowing in fall colors and historic cities at every bend of the river, this itinerary blends culture, scenery, and celebration in perfect balance.

Our ship is as fresh as can be, welcoming her very first guests in 2026. Expect beautifully designed spaces, exceptional curated cuisine, and unforgettable onboard entertainment. Evenings come alive with performances, music, and that signature Detours energy. With an attentive onboard team, including a cruise director, activity staff, and multiple Detours trip leaders, you’ll be impeccably looked after from start to finish.

This is an all-inclusive experience: all meals, drinks, guided activities, and onboard entertainment are included. Be sure to explore the “accommodations” tab for ship details and the “what’s included” section to see everything that makes this early-October Rhine adventure truly special.

Sept 28 - Oct 1 - PRE-TRIP OPTION: Oktoberfest in Munich

For those looking to begin the journey with a bucket-list celebration, you definitely don't want to miss the optional 3-night pre-tour in Munich during the world-famous Oktoberfest. This festive add-on is your chance to experience Bavaria at its liveliest, with traditional beer halls, lederhosen and dirndls, lively music, and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world. Beyond the festival grounds, you’ll have time to enjoy Munich’s historic old town, grand architecture, and welcoming beer gardens. After three memorable nights in Munich, an included transfer on October 1st will bring you to Frankfurt to meet the group and step aboard the ship, ready to continue the adventure along the Rhine.

This Oktoberfest pre-tour will be led by Detours trip leaders who can't wait to join in the fun.  More details can be found here.

Oct 1 - FRANKFURT

Our adventure begins in Frankfurt, a dynamic city where historic charm meets modern energy along the Main River. From medieval old-town streets to sleek skyline views and lively riverside promenades, Frankfurt offers the perfect blend of culture and atmosphere to kick off our journey. Whether you explore museums, sip apple wine in a local tavern, or stroll along the river, it’s an ideal starting point for the days ahead.

It’s here that our adventure together officially begins. Boarding opens at noon, giving you time to settle into your floating home before we kick things off in style at 4:00pm. Unpack, enjoy your first drink on board, and watch the city pass by as excitement builds.

Our first evening together sets the tone aboard our stunning, modern ship, brand new and launching in 2026. You’ll meet your fellow travelers, your Detours trip leaders, and the attentive onboard crew who will be with us throughout the journey.  You'll also be entertained by a fabulous evening performance to kick things off right before setting sail for our next stop in Mainz.

Oct 2 - MAINZ

After sailing overnight, we’ll wake up in Mainz, one of Germany’s oldest cities and a place where Roman history, half-timbered buildings, and riverside charm come together beautifully. With a relaxed pace and a welcoming feel, Mainz is the perfect first stop to ease into life along the Rhine.

The day begins with a guided city tour, offering an insider’s look at Mainz’s rich past, lively old town, and picturesque streets. Afterward, the afternoon is yours to explore at your own pace.  Linger in a café along the market square, stroll the riverfront, or pop into one of the city’s many wine bars showcasing the region’s famous Rieslings.

With our ship docked nearby, it’s easy to come and go as you please, returning to our comfortable home on the river whenever you’re ready to relax, refresh, and enjoy another effortless evening on board.

Oct 3 - HEIDELBERG

By morning, the landscape shifts and we find ourselves in Heidelberg, one of Germany’s most romantic and photogenic cities. Framed by forested hills and the Neckar River, Heidelberg is known for its beautifully preserved old town, historic university, and the iconic castle ruins overlooking the city, a setting that feels timeless and effortlessly charming.

Today is an independent explorer day, designed to let you experience Heidelberg your own way. Set out on a self-guided wander through the Altstadt, linger in riverside cafés, or make your way up to the castle for panoramic views. Prefer company? Your Detours trip leaders will also be heading out, offering a relaxed, social way to explore together without a formal schedule.

With our ship docked close by, you have the freedom to dip in and out throughout the day, returning to your floating home whenever you’re ready to relax and recharge before the next stretch of our journey.

Oct 4 - BADEN-BADEN

The following day brings us to Baden-Baden, an elegant spa town nestled at the edge of the Black Forest and known for its refined atmosphere and timeless charm. With grand architecture, leafy parks, and a long tradition of wellness and culture, Baden-Baden feels effortlessly polished and wonderfully relaxed.

The day begins with an included guided city tour, offering insight into the town’s storied past, from its Roman bathing roots to its days as a playground for European high society. You’ll stroll through manicured gardens, historic streets, and along the river, soaking in the beauty that has drawn visitors here for centuries.

After the tour, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure. Perhaps unwind at a café, explore the town’s shops, or indulge in Baden-Baden’s famous spa culture. With our ship close at hand, you can return whenever you like and ease into another comfortable evening on board as we continue our journey south.

Oct 5 - STRASBOURG

Our journey continues into France with a stop in Strasbourg, a city where French and German influences blend seamlessly into a culture all its own. With its half-timbered houses, winding canals, and storybook streets, Strasbourg is one of the most charming cities in the Alsace region.

Today includes a guided city tour, offering a deeper look into Strasbourg’s layered history and unique identity. You’ll explore the picturesque Petite France district, stroll past grand squares and historic buildings, and learn how this crossroads of Europe has shaped the city’s architecture, cuisine, and character.

Following the tour, enjoy free time to explore further at your own pace. Wander along the canals, linger over a leisurely lunch, or browse local shops before returning to the ship, where another relaxed evening awaits as we continue sailing along the Rhine.

Oct 6 - BREISACH

Our next stop is Breisach, a small yet striking town perched above the Rhine and surrounded by rolling vineyards. With its relaxed pace and postcard-worthy views, Breisach offers a quieter, more local perspective on life along the river and serves as a gateway to Germany’s celebrated wine country.

Today is an independent explorer day, giving you the freedom to shape the experience however you like. Wander through the compact old town, make your way up to the cathedral for sweeping views across the Rhine into France, or simply settle into a café with a glass of local wine and watch the world go by. Your Detours trip leaders will also be heading out, making it easy to join a casual group exploration if you’d prefer company.

With the ship docked nearby, you can come and go throughout the day, returning whenever you’re ready to relax, recharge, and enjoy one of our final evenings on board before reaching Basel.

Oct 7 - BASEL

Our journey comes to a close in Basel, a vibrant Swiss city set at the meeting point of Switzerland, France, and Germany. Known for its beautiful old town, riverside setting, and world-class museums, Basel offers a fitting and elegant finale to our Rhine adventure.

After a final breakfast on board, it’s time to say goodbye to our floating home and to one another. Disembarkation will take place by 10:00am. For those continuing their travels by train, an included group transfer to Basel’s central station is available. Alternatively, you’re welcome to make your own onward arrangements and continue exploring Switzerland or beyond at your own pace.

While the cruise officially ends here, the memories, friendships, and experiences gathered along the river will stay with you long after you step ashore.

THE CLIMATE

It’s early autumn in Europe, a wonderful time to experience this region as the summer crowds fade and the landscapes begin to shift into rich fall colors. Days are generally mild and comfortable, making it ideal for walking tours, riverside strolls, and enjoying time outdoors as we explore each stop along the Rhine. Daytime temperatures typically sit in the mid-60s to low-70s °F (high-teens to low-20s °C), with cooler evenings dipping into the 50s °F (low-teens °C).

While this time of year is often pleasantly dry, weather can always vary, so we recommend packing light layers and a jacket for cooler evenings or the occasional rainy day. As always, checking the forecast closer to departure will help you fine-tune your packing list.

LGBTQ FRIENDLINESS

ON SHORE

There really isn't a more LGBTQ-friendly region of the world than this.  Germany, France, and Switzerland are all known for their very welcoming attitudes to LGBTQ people.

ONBOARD

Transcend is proud to hire gay and gay-friendly staff, and we've handpicked quite the extraordinary team to host our trip! You'll be in good hands, and made to feel extremely welcome from everyone on board including the delightful and personable housekeeping staff, and the charismatic reception and serving staff! There's dozens of staff members on board to ensure every part of your onboard experience is exceptional.

WHAT TO BRING

Life on a brand new ship comes with many fabulous perks, and although the cabins are some of the largest standard cabins of any river cruise vessel in Europe, we suggest packing your bags lightly to save space.  Even if you've chosen the smallest cabin, storage design has been well thought out, so there are nooks and crannies to tuck away your belongings, but we still encourage light packing. One of the wonderful things about this itinerary is that you only need to unpack once!

The ship is quite high-end but we also want to ensure everyone is comfortable so don't worry about dressing up too fancy.  Comfortable casual wear is most appropriate during the day, especially for excursions off ship, then a pants and a collared shirt (maybe a polo or button-up) will be great for the evenings.

We'll plan a few optional but encouraged themed nights onboard and we'd encourage you to pack for those.  Expect more details in your 90-day update email.

YOUR GROUP

This river cruise is a private group just for Detours travelers. Overall, we've found that approximately 60% of the travelers on trips join solo, while the other 40% or so join with their partner or a friend, and 90% of our travelers are in their 50's and 60's. Whatever the age of the guys on our trips everyone's already got something in common, an exciting new experience in a new part of the world to share together!  Each group is led by Detours trip leaders who are there to ensure everything goes off without a hitch, allowing you to focus on having the time of your life! We welcome both men and women onto our trips although it’s important to know that almost all groups are 100% gay men.

Due to the size of this ship (60 staterooms) it's important to note that while there will of course be plenty of opportunities to explore at your own pace and find some serenity on board, there will also be the opportunity to meet plenty of other people to share the adventure (and evening cocktails and entertainment) with!

MONEY

Credit cards are commonly used in this part of the world, and Visa & Mastercard are accepted everywhere, (AMEX less so but still can be used at many places).

The official currency in the countries we'll visit is the Euro (EUR).

If possible, it's always a good idea to travel internationally with a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.  The savings will add up over the course of your trip and may end up being worth the work of getting a new card prior to your trip.

Once you're overseas, if presented with the option to pay in the local currency or your home currency, we suggest always choosing the local currency to further avoid fees.

SOLO TRAVELERS

Want to join solo? No problem! Lots of our travelers come solo and our trip will provide plenty of chances to meet great people both inside and outside of our group, including other solo travelers. As far as your accommodations go, you’ve got two choices. We can either pair you up with another solo group member in a two-bed stateroom for no extra charge, or you can have your own room for a reasonable surcharge as noted under the pricing on the main trip page.

TIPPING

Gratuities for all of the dozens of staff on board is included in your trip price ($15 USD per day per person). Some travelers like to leave 'a bit extra' for any of the staff on board that may have gone above & beyond but it's not expected.

Our recommended tip amount for trip leaders on the river cruise is approximately $10–$15 USD per person, per day.

STAYING CONNECTED

Of course, we're big advocates of 'disconnect to reconnect' in this fast-paced modern world we live in, but it's also nice to stay connected to the group with live updates, share in your adventure, and so to do this - your cell phone provider likely has several roaming options available.  We suggest reaching out to them prior to the trip to find out which package is right for you as it will depend on how much you intend to use your phone while traveling.  Keep in mind that there's free WiFi available onboard, so it would mostly just be for the time spent off the ship exploring the towns and cities as we go. There are also great eSIMs that are available for the newer model cellphones, and these are very affordable data-only options for traveling abroad.

ALARM CLOCKS

We've got NO scheduled early mornings on this trip, which will be music to the ears of the night owls!  A world without alarm clocks is one we want to be part of, and your “rise and shine” while in Europe should come from the sound of church bells in the distance or the smell of your breakfast ready and waiting!

You'll be able to have breakfast at leisure, and begin any of the day outings at reasonable times but if you're an early riser there is an espresso machine in your room (with great coffee!) or plenty of options at the 24-hour self-serve station by reception.

ELECTRICAL OUTLETS

The European plug, known as a "type C" and "type F" plug, is what you'll find everywhere on this trip. The voltage is 230V with 50 Hz frequency. These days, the majority of items that are plugged into an outlet are built to handle varying voltage and frequency levels, but just to be sure, we suggest checking your item for its acceptable range.

There's also a USB port on your stateroom's bedside table/headboard for convenient charging too!

What's included? • Full board • Free-flow beverages (Coffee, tea, bottled water, soft drinks, beer, wine, and house-brand spirits) • Welcome & farewell cocktail receptions • At least 2 Detours trip leaders plus up to 50 ship crew members • Unlimited Wi-Fi • Complimentary use of ship's e-bikes • Shipboard staff gratuities ($15 per person, per night) • Onboard entertainment - Pianist/vocalist, pre-dinner, regional drag performer (1 show) • Multiple shore excursions including transport and 3 guided tours • Daily housekeeping and turndown service • Snacks and coffee served throughout the day at The Bistro including late-night snacks until 1:00am • Fitness and wellness center •

What isn't included? • Port charges of 399 USD per person • Optional massage treatments onboard • Onboard laundry and pressing service • International airfare to/from start/end of trip • Activities outside of the those listed above  • Airport transfers

Additional spending budget?  During our excursions ashore, you might want to bring some spending money for shopping, food & beverages, depending how much you like to sample local cuisine, or how much you enjoy your souvenirs.

Trip Reviews

Ron J. - USA

December 20, 2024

Since 2018, I've been on 9 trips with Detours and I've already booked two more for 2025. A few weeks ago I returned from their Rhine River Cruise...a first for the company. It was an amazing experience. With Detours, I love that I don't have to think much about the details and everything is so well-planned. And yet, there are always flexible options on each trip. Their trip leaders (including the owner) are excellent; such great people who are absolutely dedicated to ensuring that everyone has a great experience. I’ve researched and considered similar trips with other companies and Detours is by far the best value for my money. I absolutely love Detours! I’m even thinking about repeating my Thailand and Spain trips in 2026.

I just got back from two weeks in Portugal and Morocco with Detours Travel. It was my second Detours trip (the first was Spain). This is such a great tour company and the trip leaders are great. This time around the trip leader was Ollie. He was patient, incredibly organized, super helpful and took us every night to experience the nightlife. I'm already looking forward to going with Detours next summer to Scandinavia. They make travel so much better!

What can I say? After about half a dozen trips with Detours, we are ready to book the next, again. They have amazing tour guides, amazing help both pre and post booking and an amazing concept that just works. I have booked as a singe split traveler and then as a couple and loved every single trip I have done. I have zero hesitation highly recommending them, just do it.
