10 Days in Portugal & Spain
NEW for 2026!
Our 10-day journey through Portugal and Spain is all about diving into the vibrant heart of Iberia at your own pace. From wandering Lisbon’s colorful streets to taking in Barcelona’s stunning architecture, we mix the must-see sights with authentic local experiences. Imagine e-biking along the Tagus River, unwinding in a traditional hammam in Seville, or getting hands-on with a paella cooking class (just to name a few optional activities along the way). With guided walking tours included, plus a visit inside Madrid’s Royal Palace, and seeing the Sagrada Família as it nears completion, this trip effortlessly blends culture, history, and local traditions.
Traveling in small groups, we choose boutique hotels ensuring we support the local economy as much as possible. Our journey moves at a thoughtful pace, giving you freedom to explore lively neighborhoods by Segway, on foot or e-bike, dive into museums, or relax over a glass of wine with fellow travelers after a day at a Hammam, all while respecting the communities we visit.
We’ll kick off our adventure in Lisbon, Portugal’s charming capital perched along the shimmering Tagus River. This city is a beautiful blend of historic neighborhoods, stunning architecture, and a vibrant café culture that makes you feel instantly at home. It’s the kind of place where every winding street invites you to explore and where the warmth of the community might just have you thinking about a future move. But Lisbon is only the beginning. Just 30 minutes away, the fairy-tale palaces and lush gardens of Sintra await, while the nearby beach towns offer the perfect escape for sun and sea - for those looking to venture further afield.
Over these first three days, we’ll take plenty of time to wander cobblestone alleys, climb to hilltop castles, and soak in panoramic views. Along the way, we’ll indulge in Lisbon’s famous pastéis de nata — those irresistibly creamy custard tarts — and enjoy fresh seafood or Francisinha at some of our favorite restaurants. As the evening falls, there’s the chance to experience a soulful Fado performance, immersing ourselves in Portugal’s most iconic music tradition. It’s a perfect balance of culture, relaxation, and discovery to start our journey together.
Included Activities: Lisbon walking tour with local gay guide
Optional Activities: Sintra (and castles) • Day trip to Fatima and the coast • Bike tour of Lisbon • Fado Show
Next, after a short 1 hour flight, we arrive in Seville (or “Sevilla,” as the locals say), a city that perfectly captures the essence of Spain. From the aroma of sizzling tapas and the passionate rhythms of flamenco, to the tradition of paella, Seville bursts with flavor and soul. Often called one of Spain’s most romantic cities, you’ll feel the romance in the air as you wander through its sun-drenched plazas, ornate palaces, and winding streets.
Seville also boasts a welcoming and lively LGBTQ+ scene, where you can mingle with locals and fellow travelers in vibrant, inclusive spaces. Whether it’s exploring the stunning Alcázar palace, enjoying a relaxing afternoon in a traditional hammam, or joining a leisurely Segway tour through the city’s highlights, there’s a perfect balance of history, culture, and connection waiting for us here.
This city invites us to slow down, soak it all in, and discover why Seville’s charm has captivated visitors for centuries.
Included Activities: 3-hour walking tour of Seville, including entrance into the Alcázar Palace
Optional Activities: Seville Cathedral • Plaza de España • Paella cooking class • Seville bike tour • Segway tour
Next, we take a scenic 2.5-hour train ride from Seville to Madrid for a chance to watch Spain’s changing landscapes roll by as we head to one of the world’s greatest cities. Madrid is a vibrant hub of art, history, shopping, and culinary delights, where we’ll spend two nights surrounded by impressive architecture and endless things to explore at your own pace. For art lovers, renowned museums like the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza await, offering masterpieces that span centuries.
Our included morning walking tour with a local guide will help us uncover Madrid’s hidden gems, bustling plazas, and charming alleyways, giving us a perfect introduction to the city’s heart and soul. Once night falls, there’s no better place to be than the lively streets around our group hotel, or nearby in Madrid’s eclectic, welcoming, and vibrant gay neighborhood of Chueca. It’s the perfect base for evenings spent soaking up the inclusive atmosphere, sharing stories over tapas, or discovering the city’s nightlife.
Included Activities: 3-hour walking tour of Madrid, including entrance into the Royal Palace
Optional Activities: Prado Museum • Thyssen-Bornemisza National Musuem • Bike rental • Mercado San Miguel
Our final stop is Barcelona, where history and creativity meet along the sparkling Mediterranean coast. This city is a feast for the senses - from wandering the winding Gothic Quarter to marveling at Gaudí’s visionary masterpieces. We’ll take a guided walking tour through the city’s most iconic sights and step inside the awe-inspiring Sagrada Família, which is nearing completion a century after Gaudí’s passing, a truly special moment to witness.
Beyond the landmarks, Barcelona invites you to explore at your own pace, whether that’s cycling along the beachfront, browsing bustling markets, or relaxing with a coffee in a sunny plaza. With plenty of LGBTQ+ friendly spots to discover, evenings offer a welcoming and vibrant scene to unwind and connect with fellow travelers. It’s the perfect way to cap off our ten-day adventure, blending culture, community, and the unique spirit of Catalonia.
If you have a bit more time to spare, we highly recommend adding a few relaxing days in Sitges: a vibrant, gay-friendly seaside town just a short trip from Barcelona. Known for its beautiful beaches, charming streets, and lively LGBTQ+ scene, Sitges offers the perfect spot to unwind, soak up the sun, and enjoy a slower pace before heading home. Sitges to BCN airport is ~40 mins.
Included Activities: Walking tour of Barcelona (inc. Sagrada Familia)
Optional Activities: Barcelona Biking Tour • Park Güell • La Padrera • Casa Batló • Art Museum of Catalonia • Palau de la Musica
We get it - nobody wants to spend their vacation in a cramped, smelly room. You work hard, and you deserve a comfortable, welcoming place to relax after a day of exploring. That’s why we put serious care into choosing the perfect accommodations for your trip. We’ve carefully selected our favorite hotels that combine comfort, style and convenience.
LISBON – Figueira by The Beautique

With sleek, stylish rooms and thoughtful amenities, it’s the perfect base for exploring the city’s historic streets, vibrant markets, and riverside views. SEVILLE - Soho Boutique Catedral
Located just a short stroll from Seville’s stunning cathedral, Soho Boutique Catedral combines classic Andalusian charm with contemporary flair. The hotel features bright, airy rooms with tasteful décor and a rooftop terrace where you can unwind with panoramic views of the city’s historic skyline. It’s an ideal spot to soak up Seville’s romance and vibrant energy.
MADRID - Soho Boutique Congreso

Spacious rooms, a beautiful courtyard pool, and a convenient location near Passeig de Gràcia make it a stylish retreat in the city. From here, iconic Gaudí landmarks and vibrant shopping streets are easily accessible, giving you the best of Barcelona at your doorstep.
*Please note that due to availability, these exact hotels may not all be available during all Detours trips. However, we will always replace these with similar hotels.
Traveling in September means you’ll enjoy the tail end of Iberia’s warm summer weather. Expect sunny, pleasant days with temperatures perfect for exploring cities, biking, or sitting outside with a glass of wine. Evenings start to cool down just enough to be comfortable without needing heavy layers, making it ideal for outdoor dinners or evening strolls. It’s a fantastic time to experience the region’s vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes before the cooler autumn sets in.
WiFi is widely available in hotels, cafés, and public spaces, making it easy to stay connected if you want to share your journey or check in with loved ones. But this trip also encourages you to unplug and soak in the moment, whether that’s wandering ancient streets with your phone on silent, or simply savoring a sunset over the Mediterranean with no distractions.
10 days prior to your trip, we'll set up a private Whatsapp chat, just for your group. Leading up to the trip, it's a great way to introduce yourself to your fellow group members as well as the quickest way to reach us in the office with any last-minute needs. During your trip, it's a great way to stay connected with each other and share photos along the way. Please note that users can only see posts sent after they've joined, so it's a good idea to wait until others have joined the group before posting.
While Portugal and Spain are generally very welcoming and safe for LGBTQ+ travelers, especially in major cities like Lisbon, Seville, Madrid, and Barcelona, it's always wise to stay aware of your surroundings, particularly in less touristy or rural areas. Public displays of affection are widely accepted in urban LGBTQ+ neighborhoods and popular spots, but discretion may be advisable in more conservative or unfamiliar settings. Overall, you’ll find warm hospitality and plenty of inclusive spaces, but a bit of common travel caution helps ensure a smooth, enjoyable experience.
Get ready to delight your taste buds! Iberian cuisine is rich and varied, from fresh seafood and savory tapas to hearty stews and world-famous wines. You’ll have opportunities to savor traditional dishes like Portuguese bacalhau, Spanish jamón, and of course, paella. Don’t miss out on local markets and food experiences like cooking classes or tasting sessions to truly immerse yourself in the flavors of the region.
The Spanish embrace long afternoon breaks during “siesta hours,” when many shops close so locals can relax and enjoy a leisurely meal with friends.
At Detours, we believe your food choices should be as flexible as your adventure. That’s why we include all your breakfasts to start each day right, but leave lunch and dinner open for you to explore the diverse dining options on your own terms. Whether you want to try a hidden gem, sit down at a bustling tapas bar, or splurge on a fine dining experience, your trip leader will have plenty of local favorites to recommend - just ask! This way, you eat when you want, where you want, and spend what you want.
Our packing advice? Easy - pack your bag, then take half of it out and leave it behind. Trust us, less is more when you’re roaming through Portugal and Spain’s charming streets. We often hear travelers wish they’d brought less, not more, and if you forget something, no worries. you can pick it up easily once you’re there. Just peek back at the climate section for a heads-up on what to expect, and remember, this trip is all about laid-back adventure, so leave your tuxedos and fancy heels at home. We’ll send you some handy, trip-specific packing tips 10 days before departure to keep you ready and light on your feet.
We recommend bringing your regular bank card from home and using ATMs once you arrive in Lisbon to withdraw cash as it’s usually cheaper than currency exchange services, whether at home or abroad. Portugal and Spain both use the Euro (€), and shops and restaurants don’t accept US dollars, so it’s a good idea to stock up on some Euros when you land. Credit cards are widely accepted and many restaurants we visit as a group will allow you to pay for your items separately by card.
Keep in mind, it can sometimes be tricky to use large-denomination bills in shops and restaurants, so when you withdraw cash, try and get smaller bills to make payments smoother. If you can, travel with a credit card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees, that little extra effort upfront can save you quite a bit during your trip. And here’s a pro tip: when given the choice to pay in your home currency or the local currency, always pick the local currency to avoid extra fees.
While tipping isn’t deeply ingrained as a custom in Portugal and Spain, tourism workers everywhere have come to expect gratuities for good service. This includes local guides, restaurant waitstaff, porters and housekeeping. The exact amount is always up to you, but if you’ve received excellent service, we suggest leaving around 15% at restaurants, a few euros for luggage porters and daily housekeeping, and about $10–15 USD per day for local guides. It’s a great way to show appreciation while supporting the people who make your trip memorable.
Many of our travelers ask us about what's appropriate when it comes to tipping your Detours trip leader. We think they're amazing at what they do, and if you agree you may wish to reward excellent service with a gratuity, as is customary in the industry. As a gratuity is a personal choice and depends on your experience we'll leave the amount up to your discretion, but we find most travelers budget around $100-120 Euros or USD for this trip and either pay cash directly to the trip leader or via their PayPal (Venmo is not available for Canadians).
We carefully select boutique hotels (as much as possible) that combine comfort, style, and local charm, giving you a cozy, welcoming home base in each city. These thoughtfully chosen accommodations reflect the culture of their neighborhoods and offer the perfect retreat after a day of adventures.
Be Sure to check the 'accommodation' tab for this trip to see what hotels we generally use on this trip.
All Detours trips are led by one of our very own Canadian Detours trip leaders. They're there with you every day and their job is to help ensure that this is your trip of a lifetime by taking the hassle out of your trip and enabling you to experience everything you came to Portugal & Spain for. Consider them like a friendly concierge that's traveling along with you. All of our trip leaders are gay and all are well-traveled and experienced in the destination they're leading in, so they'll be a great part of your experience!
We do absolutely everything possible to avoid needing such a mundane awakening. A world without alarm clocks is one we want to be part of, and your “rise and shine” while in this part of the world should come from the sound of church bells in the distance. However, sometimes due to train or flight schedules we are required to make early departures, but we do everything we can to minimize this.
Our Detours groups are run with a maximum of 16 travelers. Ages of group members vary but around 90% of our travelers are in their 40's, 50's, and 60's. Whatever the age of the guys on our trips everyone's already got something in common, an exciting new experience in a new country or two! Each group is led by a Detours trip leader who is there to ensure everything goes off without a hitch, allowing you to focus on having the time of your life! We welcome both men and women onto our trips although it’s important to know that most groups are 100% gay men.
One of the best parts of group travel is the unique people you get to share this new adventure with. Your fellow travelers will be coming from different parts of the world with different backgrounds, personalities and ages and we've found the key to the best group dynamic is arriving with an open mind, a willingness to share, and respect for your fellow travelers. In practice this can mean ensuring you're on time for group activities/departures, practicing patience with each other, and embracing some of the social opportunities through your trip.
Traveling solo? No problem! Over half of our travelers come solo, and there will be plenty of chances to meet great people both inside and outside of our group.
As far as your accommodations go, you’ve got two choices: We can either pair you up with another solo group member in a two-bed room for no extra charge, or you can have your own room for a reasonable surcharge (price is listed in the trip price box).
Portugal & Spain both use the "type C" and "type F" plug, the same as most European countries and several other places in the world. The voltage is 230V with 50 Hz frequency. These days, the majority of items that are plugged into an outlet are built to handle varying voltage and frequency levels, but just to be sure, we suggest checking your item for its accetable range.
What's included? • All taxes • All group transport between itinerary destinations • Accommodations for your 10-day Detours experience • All full breakfasts • Welcome dinner and drinks • Lisbon walking tour with local guide • One-way international flight from Lisbon to Seville • Seville walking tour with local guide including entrance to Royal Alcázar • High speed train from Seville to Madrid • Madrid walking tour with local guide including entrance to the Royal Palace • High speed train from Madrid to Barcelona • Barcelona walking tour including entrance to Sagrada Familia • Knowledgeable and fun Detours trip leader •
What isn't included? • Meals and drinks outside of those listed above • Activities outside of the those listed above • International Airfare • Arrival/departure airport transfers • Optional gratuities •
Additional spending budget? Your big-ticket items are included through the trip, but you'll want to budget for additional spending such as additional meals, drinks, shopping, activities, etc. These costs can vary dramatically with differing personal habits but we suggest expecting to spend an additional $900 USD at the lower end for the more budget-conscious and $1300 USD at the higher end for the splurgers. We suggest arriving to Portugal with a minimum of approximately 300 Euros.

I just got home from 12 days in Spain with Brandon (and Clay in training)... this trip was nothing short of amazing. It was my first time to all of the locations on the trip. In real life, I like to be in control of everything... but on this trip, I handed it over to the most unflappable, kind, energetic, creative and outstanding team leader (Brandon) that anyone could wish for. There was not a T uncrossed or an I undotted... in the trip descriptions, it appears that you may have to figure out more than you actually do... if you want a trip where you can leave your brain at home, you can have it... if you want a lot of free time, you can do that too. You always have dinner companions, like minded excursion buddies and photographers if you want them. For purposes of anyone who might think they are too young or old, our age group ranged from 30 to early 60's (I am closer to the older side of that group lol), but it did not make a difference! I would say the trip gave me an opportunity to grow, reflect, energize and enjoy. It was truly one of those trips that make you feel even better about life when it was done. I truly cannot thank Brandon enough for his leadership... Clay for his partnership... and the many friends I made on this trip (you know who your are!)... I haven't laughed as much as I did in this trip in a long time... stop pondering whether you should book it, just do it... you will not regret it!

All the fun with none of the stress!! Detours does an incredible job. I’ve taken two trips with them and it’s my favorite way to travel! They handle the hotels and loosely plan some activities, but you have plenty of free time to do things at your own place and the trip leader is always there to make suggestions and coordinate activities for you. The group of guys that they assembled to travel with are wonderful and I have made some lasting friendships from my trips.
