I can't endorse Detours enough, and am already planning my next tour with them :)
I have done two tours with Detours -- Greece in June 2018 and Thailand & Cambodia in July 2022 -- and I was extremely pleased with both. Owner Miles is especially helpful in answering any questions and assisting with any issues you may have. The tour leaders -- Dan and Kyle, respectively -- were extremely knowledgeable, engaging, personable and resourceful. The accommodations were very comfortable, and the activities -- both included and optional -- enabled me to not only get an appreciation of what the different cultures have to offer, but also an opportunity to simply relax and enjoy the experience of "being there". I can't endorse Detours enough, and am already planning my next tour with them :)

...a great trip and wonderful time!! I look forward to another Detours excursion!
In June I traveled with Detours—and a great group of guys—in Israel and Jordan. The schedule was impressively organized, with just the right mix of group activities and freedom to be on our own. We were led by Brandon, whose infectious energy and winning personality put everyone at ease and made for some very fun times.
One feature of the Detours experience I came to appreciate was having both local guides—one each in Israel and Jordan—and a trip leader to accompany and coordinate throughout. Along the way, we met another gay tour group with an itinerary similar to ours but with only local guides (and no trip leader); one of the group said that communication had been a problem at times. We were fortunate to have not only a trip leader, but in Brandon a seasoned and professional guide to navigate smoothly through the two countries and many adventures, and all the while in constant communication through our WhatsApp group.
All in all, a great trip and wonderful time!! I look forward to another Detours excursion!

I just returned from my second Detours trip and my one-word review has been upgraded from “wow” to “astounding”.
I just returned from my second Detours trip and my one-word review has been upgraded from “wow” to “astounding”. Our tour guide, Brandon, and the Detours crew crafted a remarkable journey across Greece. The venues selected demonstrated an in-depth knowledge of the area coupled with a grasp of their audience. Simply put—they knew the best places to go to ensure we had a blast—and we DID!
This trip started off in Athens where we jumped right in and saw the city and the major highlights including the impressive Parthenon. Then off to Milos, Santorini and Mykonos; all by ferry which is an adventure alone. Milos offered amazing sights, food, and yeah—I jumped off a cliff there!! We rocked out on a sunset boat trip which words can’t describe. Then off to Santorini was as impressive as the pictures online; the water was mesmerizing, the food yummy, and the people friendly. Our lodging in Santorini was in the middle of everything one would want to be around. Then we zipped off to Mykonos—OMG, this is a magical place! So much to do, eat, drink and explore. Am I being vague—yes! This was a special part of the trip. I’ll mention one place, JackieO’ beach resort---YES!!!
If you think I’m skimming on the trip details--I am! The destinations were awesome, the food and drinks outstanding, but it was the PEOPLE that made the memories. 14 strangers became FAM magically—we still maintain a WhatsApp thread to keep up with each other.
I mentioned in a previous review that once you go Brandon, you never go random, which remains true. He has a way of creating an inclusive environment where everyone KNOWS they belong. Words can’t do this justice—you have to live it.
I subscribe to the idea that actions speak louder than words so allow me to share one last thing. I put down a deposit for a trip on another company last year that I decided to forfeit because I’ve enjoyed my travels with Detours so much I didn’t want to venture out. It may sound short-sighted until you’ve been on a Detours trip!

Thank you Detours for making this an incredible experience and so easy for a first timer. It was beyond what I could have hoped for.
I was a bit nervous taking my first solo trip overseas. Would I connect with others? Would I feel comfortable? Am I going to be in some roach infested hut? lol. So many concerns but I decided to be brave.
I could not have asked for a better trip. Immediately connected with the team via WhatsApp, so I got to chat a little before arrival. Each of the places we stayed were very nice and right near the thick of things. Our tour leader Brandon, did an amazing job. He made the whole trip feel like we were a group of long lost friends, joking and laughing with us, going out on the nightlife with us and constantly keeping us up to date on what the plan was. There was never a time I felt confused or lost...well, we did lose each other sometimes (hard not to with these queens), but he was always quick to drop his location to us and find us quickly. How he herded us along, I will never know, but he was always right there and available. I even wandered off to shop on occasion and never felt micromanaged. "Go be free, don't get lost" lol. I have been on other tours with other companies, and the leader always checked out once they put us to task. Brandon didn't, and we had so many good memories and laughs because of what he brought to the table. We even got to meet two others from the company who flew in! One just came to meet us and say hi on his way somewhere else, the other came in early for his next group and joined us out at the clubs. Unforgettable times!
I will say Brandon led us down some sketchy alleys sometimes...only for us to come out at some of the best damn food and views I have ever had; places I never would have found on my own. There not only was a ton of options presented for those who wanted additional excursion such as traveling to the historic island of Delos, but even the ones preselected were completely worth it. I do not regret a single penny or minute spent, and I am already planning the next one in just a couple months.
Thank you Detours for making this an incredible experience and so easy for a first timer. It was beyond what I could have hoped for. I appreciate that you are all so fun and not like a big box company! You keep it personal and life changing.

It is hard to overstate how a Detours trip recharges me
I just cannot say enough good things about Detours Travel - This was the third Trip- Central Europe this time May '22 and I just enjoyed it so much. From the wicked funny tour guide in Budapest, to the amazing vistas of Prague - and the camaradery and Fun-loving natures of the group participants, it is hard to overstate how a Detours trip recharges me, removing workaday world and dropping the group into fun, education and even magical places. Detours Leader Dan is the best and masterfully handles all problems, with resilient energy and boundless good humor.

Looking forward to our next adventure with this organization. I think they do a five star job.
A terrific vacation! This is the second time my partner and I have been on a Detours adventure. They are professional in the handling of logistics of our trip, and sensitive to the varying needs and requests of our group. Our trip leader was there every step of the way, willing to assist if we needed that extra help, and/or give us the space we need to do our thing.
Looking forward to our next adventure with this organization. I think they do a five star job.

I couldn't be more happy with my first "solo" trip, as well as my first "tour".
Can't say enough great things about this tour group. I'm a new solo traveler and was apprehensive about going across the globe alone, but Detours made for an unbelievable experience in Eastern Europe. I was also wary of doing a "tour" as I generally like to explore the sites I like with leisure but again, Detours hit it out the park. Our tour leader, Brandon was simply amazing. He was very kind, patient, and knowledgeable... not to mention, fun! He always set up plans for the day, but all travelers were free to join or explore on their own. This was the nice part about this tour, you are never out of options and can always be with the group, but are never expected to be. For instance, I had already been to Berlin, so most of the days there I explored the city by myself as the rest of the group visited the sites I had already been to. But, the nice part was I was able to meet up with the group at any time, including the great dinners planned, so I never had to eat a meal by myself (which was the most unappealing part of vacationing solo for me).
Detours has a great protocol of setting up a walking tour on the first day of visiting a city, which was nice because you got a local guide to provide info and it also allowed you to determine which sites you wanted to visit during the rest of your stay. Plus, the guides we had were fantastic - personable, knowledgeable, and local. The tour leader then make plans to visit the top attractions and you are free to tag along or go somewhere else that's more to your preference. Regardless of what you choose, your leader was always in communication so it was easy to find the group throughout the day.
The accommodations we had were fantastic as well. They were more boutique hotels, but very nicely appointed and central to each city. I would say the included breakfast at each one was also great!
Finally, I couldn't complete this review without raving about our tour leader, Brandon. He was so nice and patient, always ensuring that each person was happy and taken care of, including when there were unforeseen mishaps. He chose great restaurants and destinations, but was also open to suggestions by others. He's very personable and fun to hang out with... he was right there with me at 3am dancing at the clubs, which was unexpected but awesome!
I couldn't be more happy with my first "solo" trip, as well as my first "tour". I'm glad I stumbled upon Detours and am already planning on my next adventure. HIGHLY recommend.

Already planning for my next tour! Thanks, Brandon!
Great tour company with personalized service. Tours are not super regimented but the guides always have activities that you are able to join upon your interest, which is perfect for those that like a tour but also the flexibility to do your own thing. Communication throughout the process was excellent and the guides were personable, fun, kind, patient, and knowledgeable. Plus there are the special touches, such as photos that are taken by the guide and shared in an album at the end of the tour.
Already planning for my next tour! Thanks, Brandon!

I don’t usually write reviews but I like to give a shout-out to Detours as it is a well run travel group tour company and always have nicest travelers in the group.
I had an incredible tour of Egypt with Detours Travel in March 2022. Everything was taken care of from the time I landed in Cairo until I departed 10 days later. The trip leader, Dan, and our local guide, Hend, provided outstanding customer services that enhanced our trip experience. They are so knowledgeable about history and local customs that I don’t think I could have experienced if I took a trip by myself.
I don’t usually write reviews but I like to give a shout-out to Detours as it is a well run travel group tour company and always have nicest travelers in the group. This was my second tour with Detours after the Peru trip and planning to get a third one next year.

A big thank to Dan, our trip leader. Always smiling, accurate leader. Always all ears for anything.
A wonderful trip through time. The pyramids are breathtaking. The temples (Edfu, Louqsor and Karnak are my favorite) are stunning. So grateful for having the chance to do a Hot air balloon tour. Thank you Detours, it’s always a pleasure to meet people from all over America and be able to share moments and talks like I shared in the Egypt trip.
Thank you to Hend, our local trip leader. A diamond !

I loved this tour so much, I might just do it again in the future!
BEST GAY TOUR EVER!
The first thing I have to mention is the awesome leadership of our Tour Leader who inaugurated the Eastern Europe tour with us:
BRANDON FOLKES! He learned the tour on the fly from Dan who was unable to lead this tour. What BRANDON put together with Dan's help was a truly awesome experience in THREE amazing cities and three of the finest hotels I have ever been in! The walking tours were fascinating and entertaining, the restaurants he chose for us were nothing short of fabulous! There are so many activities to choose from - but Brandon was always there to help you decide which one to take advantage of.
I learned one thing, you do not have to go on every activity. You can chose your own pace and spend time wandering through each city and then return to the group for those amazing dinner spots! And after that, Brandon would allow everyone to chose which bars, night clubs to go, with the group or to explore by oneself. He would send us links to each place and let us decide. No pressure ever - ever! Except your own push to squeeze every second of fun out of each day.
Brandon's leadership and concern for every single traveler made this experience one that I will remember for a very long time.
I loved this tour so much, I might just do it again in the future! After all, these cities have so much more to offer than I ever dreamed of!~
Oh yeah, and I think I made some friends along the way!
So just DO IT and GO with DETOURS!

Had a wonderful ten days in Budapest, Prague, and Berlin with Detours Travel. It was amazing from beginning to end. Great group of new friends and Brandon was an incredible group leader. The incredible trips, the always positive attitude of the staff and the attention to detail make Detours the only group I will travel with.
My husband and I just returned from our second Detours trip. Our first trip to Israel/Jordan was so amazing that I immediately booked a second trip to Greece. Enter Covid and our June 2020 Greece trip became October 2020. Covid still had other plans so that became a trip to Egypt in 2021; still Covid had plans pushing the trip to April 2022 and it finally happened! With every reschedule Miles was compassionate and accommodating, even as his own business was suffering devastating blows. It was worth the wait for sure. In true Detours style everything was taken care of for us, Kyle was our Detours trip leader and he was always responsive and a joy to be with. In Egypt we also had a single Egyptian guide that accompanied us throughout the trip and we were blessed to share our trip with Hend. Not only is Hend a wealth of Egyptian knowledge but she is just a great soul, I couldn't imagine the trip without her, she became one of the group. It is hard to put into words what it is like the first time you set your eyes on the great pyramid or the first mummy that you see and the temples will give you goosebumps. The optional hot air ballon excursion is truly a must do, in fact, it may be exhausting but when in Egypt do it all. As for sailing down the Nile, well, it is like a dream. Detours structured the trip to include the best that Egypt has to offer. Once again, my husband and I concluded our Detours vacation with memories to last a lifetime and several new friends that I can't wait to see again. Now we have a decision to make, which Detours trip will be next? They have so many great destinations and I want to do them all and I will only do them with Detours. The incredible trips, the always positive attitude of the staff and the attention to detail make Detours the only group I will travel with.

ur Thailand and Cambodia experience was a ton of little things that made an immensely fun adventure! Can’t wait for our next Detours trip!
This was our first trip with Detours Travel — and a 30th anniversary trip to boot — so we had the hopes and expectations of a memorable travel experience. The Detours Team did not disappoint us! Thailand and Cambodia were laid before us in all their splendor with amazing sites to see, lots of laughs with our new travel companions and plenty of flexibility and downtime in the schedule. The flexibility was key as it allowed my husband and I to dive into extra activities and sights as others relaxed by the pool; it was the perfect balance. And all the while our amazing tour leader, Miles, was working in the background — solving cancelled flights, border closures and the ever-evolving COVID travel situation with unfathomable calm. When problems arose, he simply said, “Relax . . . I’ll work it all out” and he did, every time, with a smile on his face. Miles and his team are made for this — the perfect combination of consummate hosts, problem solvers and travel experts. And Miles managed to snag some beers and a bottle of local whiskey for a 30th anniversary toast for us as the sun set off Phra Nang Beach. It’s the little things that make a memorable trip — and our Thailand and Cambodia experience was a ton of little things that made an immensely fun adventure! Can’t wait for our next Detours trip!

This was our first Detours Travel experience but we are already sizing up which one we'll do next.
The nine intrepid travelers who ventured to Thailand and Cambodia in March 2022 were in for a truly unforgettable experience: All the iconic sites were practically devoid of tourists, and the local guides were thrilled to see foreigners returning and eager to give us top-notch service. Yes, the price to be paid was some potentially stressful headaches like cancelled flights, closed borders, shifting requirements for COVID testing/quarantine/visas/etc. But our guide Miles made navigating all these obstacles look easy and stress-free. And the guys this trip attracted were all willing and eager to adapt to the changing itinerary. In the end we saw everything we came for and a lot more. This was our first Detours Travel experience but we are already sizing up which one we'll do next.

11 Days in Costa Rica - (March 7, 2022)
These nine perfect strangers became a family and bidding each other farewell wasn’t easy.
My one-word review-- WOW! This was my first group trip; Detours nor Costa Rica disappointed! Costa Rica was stunning, our trip leader, Brandon, was awesome, and the experiences offered memorable.
The trip started in San Jose where we had drinks, a yummy dinner, and a night on the town. This is when we all met, nine perfect strangers that became besties. The first stop was the Villa where I promptly felt like I was on an episode of The Bachelor (minus the roses). Stunning is the only word that describes this part of the tour with justice. The Villa was beautiful, the views breath taking, and the company awesome. The chefs made food that can only be described as an experience! The hosts and team at the Villa made us feel like family. Did we salsa dance with one of the chefs—maybe!
Then off to Manuel Antonio! The resort we stayed at sported striking views of just about everything, there were adorable monkeys, and a great social scene. We went to trendy restaurants, checked out the national park (more monkeys!), and got quality beach time in. Some activities: rented a catamaran, ziplining, and spa time!
We then headed to La Fortuna where we enjoyed remarkable views of a volcano, hung out in a natural hot springs pool, and enjoyed the town. Some of us explored the volcano on ATVs, others went tubing and some checked out the sloths. There was so much to do.
While all these places were a blast, the time on the transports was equally fun. You’ll have to ask Brandon about the werewolf game!
The only somber part of the trip was the farewell dinner; there wasn’t a dry eye. These nine perfect strangers became a family and bidding each other farewell wasn’t easy. We still chat on messenger so perhaps it was more of a “see you soon’ then a farewell.
In closing, this tour offered something for everyone. What made this trip so unique was our trip leader, Brandon. He went to great lengths to ensure each person had the experience they wanted. If you wanted to check out something, he made it happen. We came up with this phrase that says it all: Once you go Brandon, you never go random. I’ll certainly be booking another tour with Brandon!

There is just so much I could say about Detours. I will leave it at this: go on a trip with them! You will be in great hands!
I have just returned from my fourth trip with Detours and have a fifth planned. My journey with them started 8 years ago and will continue for many years to come if the company stays true to its mission, and continues to provide the excellent costumer service, amazing destinations, and value for your money that they are known for. Detours has an owner and a group of tour leaders that really care about their clients. I have formed friendships and a fondness for many of them. Friendships that has arisen because they do not see their clients as bags of cash, but as people with whom they can share amazing experiences and their love for travel and adventure. They do this while maintaining professionalism and personally tailored customer service from every step of a trip.
That was the formal part of my review! Here’s the skinny on some of the great moments I have lived through with Detours:
Thailand: Release of floating lanterns into the night sky. Private yacht charter for a day (I jumped off the boat with a live vest and face planted onto the water… not gonna do that part again 😅). Days meeting tigers, elephants, and monkeys! And not to be forgotten: Thai massages! This is a trip that I would do again in a heartbeat! Especially because the itinerary has changed and there are wonderful new experiences packed into it.
South Africa: Day in animal sanctuary where I got to pet a cheetah, have a vulture (that was half my size!) stand in my outstretched arm, and come the closest I’ve ever been to a lion and leopard. Day at the amazing botanical garden in Cape Town. Tipsy wine tasting tour through some of South Africa’s vineyards.
Peru: The greatest trip of my life because it brought me together with my fiancé! This trip was also a culinary experience! Peru has amazing food for amazing prices. Every dish was presented as if I was sitting in a upscale restaurant back at home. I tried ceviche for the first time and I liked it! I discovered Pisco and Pisco sours. I joined a Peruvian cooking class and hope to recreate those recipes at a future dinner party. It was also amazing to learn about the ancient civilizations of South America and have the privilege to touch the walls and walk over the streets of Cusco which were built by the Incas so many centuries ago.
Costa Rica: Horseback riding (and galloping!) and taking in the amazing vistas of Arenal volcano. Whitewater rafting on the Balsa river. Jumping under the waves of Espadilla beach with my hat, long sleeve top and long bottom rash guards leaving my fellow groups members amused at the extremes I go to in order to stay safe from the sun!
In all of these trips I have met great people that will have a special place in my heart even if I do not cross paths with them again. I will take this opportunity to give my personal “BEST TRIP LEADER AWARD 4EVAH” to Brandon! If you are lucky to have him as a trip leader and like to play games then you are in luck!
There is just so much I could say about Detours. I will leave it at this: go on a trip with them! You will be in great hands!

We made some great friends and even better memories.
My husband and I just finished the Costa Rica trip for our honeymoon. We had never been to Costa Rica and wanted to be able to see as much as possible. I had previously taken their Thailand trip, so I thought this would be a great way to accomplish this. The idea of sharing your honeymoon with 10 other gay men may not seem so romantic. However, I was aware that we were able to spend as much time with the group, or alone, as we wanted. Not surprisingly, we thoroughly enjoyed the other travelers and spent the majority of the time as a group. The activities were all amazing. I highly recommend the white water rafting/tubing, zip-lining and sloth tour.
The major draw to detours is how effortless it is for travelers. As soon as we got off the plane, the only decision we had to make was what activities to do the following day. Brandon, group leader, had everything perfectly planned and organized. He even treated us to a bottle of champagne upon arrival! He set us up with a spa day, recommended great restaurants, and organized for our laundry to be done. My husband wanted to plan a surprise Birthday date night for me, and Brandon helped him purchase flowers, pick a perfect restaurant, and found a chocolate cafe for dessert. We then went to the natural hot springs for drinks and to relax.
It definitely was not a typical honeymoon, but we had just done a vacation by ourselves and wanted to do something new, without having to do any of the leg work! We made some great friends and even better memories. Brandon was a gem and would love to go on another tour with him! Many good laughs, activities and lots of drinks!!

This was my first Detours experience, and I still can’t believe how life-changing it was.
This was my first Detours experience, and I still can’t believe how life-changing it was. I gifted myself the trip for a milestone birthday, and I thought it would be interesting to say the least. I did not expect to come home with such a dramatic shift in perspective on so many aspects of my life, as well as some amazing new friends!
I was thoroughly impressed by the amount of preparation the Detours team puts into their trips. Brandon, our trip leader, was phenomenal. He tirelessly kept our group engaged and made sure we each got the most of our time in Costa Rica. He handled every detail, from the mundane to minor medical emergencies, with complete professionalism. He also knows how to have fun!
I cannot overstate how much I appreciate work the Detours team takes in curating the details of their trips. The accommodations were wonderful, with breathtaking views along the way. There are more activities offered than you will be able to complete in one trip. I took advantage of every activity and opportunity presented, and I don’t regret a thing! A couple minor scrapes and bruises are sweet reminders of having been on an adventure. If you have mobility concerns you can always opt out, but I hope you can enjoy as much as possible.
I absolutely hope to join Detours for another trip someday. If you are thinking of going on a trip with Detours, bring an open heart and mind, and a sense of wonder – Detours will take care of the rest!

Spectacular all around!
I could not have asked for a better adventure to Peru. Miles and Kyle were great trip leaders. They are organized, knowledgeable and relaxed. It was easy to get to know them and they made everyone feel welcome. I am not an experienced international traveler and they made the whole process really easy. The price for the trip was also very competitive compared to other tour operators who offer similar trips. The accommodations were top-notch - especially in Machu Pichu Pueblo. Going up to the top of Machu Pichu was definitely the highlight of the trip. Peru still has pandemic restrictions in place when we went so the number of people there was limited. We had the place to ourselves at times. Spectacular all around! I would encourage anyone who is looking for a gay tour operator to consider Detours.

I recommend Detours Egypt’s trip to anyone who was ever curious but apprehensive about their safety in Egypt but wanted to experience the wonders of the world.
Detours makes it feel like you’re traveling with friends. Always attentive, professional and open to suggestions about travel ideas during the tour. It is truly the perfect mix between spontaneity and planned travel which is rare to find with a gay travel company. Dan was amazing as our tour leader and Hend their local Egyptian guide is simply the best tour guide I’ve ever traveled with hands down. Hend (Egypt guide) was profesional, organized and assertive when needed in a very male, corrupt government and travel ministry. I recommend Detours Egypt’s trip to anyone who was ever curious but apprehensive about their safety in Egypt but wanted to experience the wonders of the world.

This was our first Detours trip, but it definitely won't be our last. We had an amazing time.
My partner and I recently got back from the 12 Days in Peru trip. This was our first Detours trip, but it definitely won't be our last. We had an amazing time. I expected an interesting trip based on the itinerary, but I had no idea that the food would be this good. The restaurants were amazing! I also didn't expect the accommodations to be this fabulous. All of our hotels were really spectacular. The group activities (riding all-terrain vehicles, dune buggy ride and sand boarding, boat ride in Paracas) were a blast, and the trip provides plenty of free time to pursue individual interests. Everyone on the trip was super nice. No drama at all. I made some nice friends, some of whom I'll definitely keep in touch with. I can't wait for the next trip.

I was so pleased with my Detours Peru trip that I booked my next trip with them before the first one ended. They do an outstanding job of curating interesting adventures that take you outside of the standard tourist destinations and activities.
First-rate accommodations, and they offer a great variety of organized group time plus flex time to meet individual needs and interests. The small group size also makes it easy to get to know others. I have 14 new friends as a result of this trip.
They also find great local guides and restaurants. A tremendous value for the price.

Overall, an incredible and moving experience with fellow gay travelers that I'll happily do again
This was my first trip with Detours, and it went off without a hitch. We traveled quite a bit in country, and each destination was reached with a minimum of effort and no problems. The logistics of this trip were demanding, and Miles and Kyle (the group leaders) handled it perfectly. The destinations along the way were varied and allowed for visits to an exciting city of almost 10 million (Lima), to a city built into the mountains of more than 500,000 people (Cusco), to the awe-inspiring Macchu Picchu and the great desert terrain of Paracas. All along the way, Miles navigated the needs of 14 people, while keeping us entertained, informed, and very well-fed. Overall, an incredible and moving experience with fellow gay travelers that I'll happily do again next summer in Tuscany! Thanks Miles and Detours for giving me an experience I won't soon forget

I've now experienced trips with Dan, Kyle and Miles and all of them have been fun, adventurous, kind and make everyone feel welcome!
I just returned from my 2nd trip with Detours and had an amazing adventure all throughout Peru in Oct. 2021. My first trip was South Africa in Jan. 2020. Both trips have been amazing - I love the open format of many things being included in the trip and a lot of optional "add-ons" to experience or just take the day and chill! I have done as many add-ons as possible and have never been let down! I've now experienced trips with Dan, Kyle and Miles and all of them have been fun, adventurous, kind and make everyone feel welcome! Now I have about 30 friends around the world and memories for a lifetime; thanks to traveling with Detours!

I can't wait for my next trip with Detours!!
I just completed my second vacation with Detours and it was amazing. Trip leaders Miles and Shane were awesome. I love the small group concept, as well as the freedom they provide to join in the activities that you want to, and not pay for activities you dont want to participate in. The trip leaders are so friendly and organized and coordinate everything. The small group size allows you to get to know people better, and easier to get reservations, travel, and change plans quickly to adapt to situations like weather. I can't wait for my next trip with Detours!!

There is never an end to the adventure outings that happen daily.
Just completed the September/October 2021 tour to Croatia. It was a great time as always with a great group of guys. You get to experience so much more with a tour group than you would on your own. There is never an end to the adventure outings that happen daily. Miles and Shane are excellent tour guides and I cannot wait till my next tour, which may be Italy??? :)

The trip was amazing and Detours made it very easy. Shane was our trip leader and he left no stone unturned.
We just completed a trip to Greece in September 2021. The trip was amazing and Detours made it very easy. Shane was our trip leader and he left no stone unturned. He was always five steps ahead of the gang. Some people in our group like more of the history stuff and others like the beach. He had multiple itinerary options throughout the day to please all involved. We felt very comfortable traveling to Greece during Covid. Everyone in our group was vaccinated and the authorities checked VAX cards on all the different islands and Athens. Thanks for such a great trip. We are looking forward to the next adventure with Detours.

This was truly one of the best travel experiences I’ve had. I’m looking forward to my next adventure
What an amazing adventure in Spain! This was my first group travel experience, and I’m so glad that I chose to do it with Detours. I appreciated the great communication before the trip and the thoughtful approach to each place we visited. I was a bit apprehensive about their flexible travel concept, but after experiencing it I’m hooked!
Our trip leader turned an interesting looking itinerary into something that was beyond expectations. He was full of suggestions on activities that we could do as a group or individually, and the meals that we shared together were fantastic. I was able to experience Spain with the company of new friends, and with a great group leader that made it feel like we were traveling with a local.
This was truly one of the best travel experiences I’ve had. I’m looking forward to my next adventure with the Detours team!

It will forever be etched in my mind as one the funnest, most memorable experiences I’ve ever had.
My husband and I signed up for a Detours trip a couple years back but because of COVID the trip was understandably postponed and pushed back. We appreciated how easy the communication was regarding our payment and how we could easily apply it towards a future trip, as we did.
This was our first Detours trip and first group travel experience. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I can say now without a doubt I HIGHLY recommend Detours group travel. It will forever be etched in my mind as one the funnest, most memorable experiences I’ve ever had. I also want to give credit to our amazing, knowledgeable, witty, and SUPER fun guide Casey Miller! He made the trip for me, for us! Traveling can be stressful and nerve wrenching, but with Casey it was like traveling with a friend. He was always helpful, and so easy to get a long with. I enjoyed his company tremendously and I felt like we quickly became friends. I enjoyed his easy, laid back style yet he was organized and had everything arranged to make the trip easy for traveling from city to city. All the side excursions were also organized and he gave the group wonderful recommendations for daily activities and places to see and visit. As a group, he brought us together! We laughed, ate well, and saw amazing sights that I will cherish for years to come!
Thank you Detours for going above and beyond my travel expectations! I hope to join in on another adventure again some day!

A great testament to how much I've enjoyed traveling with them is that I have 3 more trips scheduled.
I researched gay travel groups and Detours just grabbed my attention. I went to Greece with Miles in 2019 and had a wonderful experience and as I have told everyone it gave me a passion for traveling. I just completed my second trip with Detours with Shane leading the group and again had a wonderful time. The hotels are exceptional and the places we ate at were wonderful! Detours was on top of every detail including the vans picking us up on time to every detail thought of. Everything went smoothly. I enjoyed immensely meeting people from all over the country to the world and have enduring friendships! Miles and Shane couldn't have been nicer. Their friendly and always happy attitudes were contagious! A great testament to how much I've enjoyed traveling with them is that I have 3 more trips scheduled. I highly recommend Detours!! Thank you for being the best thing that happened to us in 2020
On March 20, 2020 we embarked on a vacation to Costa Rica with Detours Gay Adventure Travel! This trip became a life changing event for all of us. At the very start of the pandemic, we arrived and met 7 wonderful people. This was literally right before knew how crazy Covid-19 would get. From there we all faced daily anxiety related to the Covid-19 virus. And we all made decision to make the best of it as safely as possible. As many of you will recall things were changing in the World minute by minute. Thankfully we booked with Detours and they helped us find solace in the vast Costa Rican jungles, in the breathtaking nature, in the gorgeous beaches, in the waterfalls, the raging rivers, at the coffee plantation, throughout the city, with the people, in the delicious food, peering out at the massive Volcano in La Fortuna , sitting in the hot springs, listening to music, hiking the waterfalls at the Villa, sharing each other’s stories and basically creating unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. Owner Miles and tour guide Brandon took care of us beyond expectation. Try to imagine owner Miles watching one tour after another shut down across the World. He kept calm and continued to be a delightful host the entire trip... Miles and Brandon never missed a beat for our 13 day adventure!!! With each change, Miles and Brandon kept us informed and ensured that our trip carried on, so long as it was still safe to do so. Thank you for being the best thing that happened to us in 2020, aside from Trump losing the Presidency. ❤️🏳️🌈

They can't control the pandemic or the consequences of it but they can control how they react to it and they have reacted in the best way possible.
I took my first trip with Detours in November 2018 to Israel and Jordan. It was one of the best trips of my life, aside from a great destination, the guys I met were great and in a few instances I have maintained ongoing friendships. So it was a no brainer when I learned one of my friends from that trip booked Greece for this June. Unfortunately the universe had other plans and the worldwide Covid pandemic forced Detours to cancel our trip. During this time of total uncertainty on every level, general communication to the public has not been great. Miles and Detours are the exception, even as I know they are dealing with business related issues far beyond the impact to their customers, Miles somehow manages to find time to put out weekly detailed updates. His updates are factual and sympathetic to his clients when we are only losing a vacation (for now). This is amazing considering he is fighting to maintain his livelihood. He also finds time to answer individual emails in very detailed responses when I’m sure at times he wants to toss his laptop against the wall and walk away! It’s a true measure of who Miles and the entire Detours group are and why anyone should feel confident working with them. While the current pandemic has forced that trip to be cancelled, I did not hesitate to rebook a new trip next April to Egypt with Detours. They can't control the pandemic or the consequences of it but they can control how they react to it and they have reacted in the best way possible. I can't wait to join them in April for Egypt and eventually I will get to Greece, with Detours of course!

I'm looking forward to traveling with them again in the near future.
I've been on several Detours Trips - Greece, Spain, Central Europe and New Zealand. We've been on cruises and several group trips over the years. The Detours concept is really my favorite - I think it offers a great value and experience. Tour leaders are excellent, and I enjoy that the itineraries aren't super-structured. I think the vacations are equally comfortable for couples and singles. Size of the groups is kept relatively small, which is more manageable than a huge tour that would require a bus. I'm looking forward to traveling with them again in the near future.

I recommend Detours Travel without reservation.
We recently traveled with Detours to Greece. From the moment we began our initial inquiry to the time we returned home from our trip, Detours guided us each step of the way. We especially love that Detours planned everything, but developed the itinerary so that we didn’t feel pressured for time and allowed us to break away and do our own thing if we wanted to. And the trip is an incredible value! We also love the small groups size. Our trip guide, Miles, truly went out of his way to make sure that any needs were met, and was always available to answer questions and provide advice. When storms in the U.S. prevented us from returning from Greece for two days, Miles was right there to make sure we had accommodations during our delay. We loved our trip so much that we booked another trip to Egypt this summer. The recent pandemic derailed our trip, but they allowed us to rebook another trip, so we’ll be traveling with Detours to Portugal and Morocco soon! I recommend Detours Travel without reservation.

I've been on two trips with Detours, and both have been outstanding
I've been on two trips with Detours, and both have been outstanding (Israel/Jordan in particular)! I often travel solo, planning my own way, so was initially hesitant about group travel. But Detours was perfect -- small groups, with plenty of free time built in to do your own thing. I've met great guys on both trips, who I keep in touch with. Group leaders have also been wonderful -- friendly, knowledgable, helpful with problem solving, and enthusiastic. I'm looking forward to my next adventure with Detours, this time to Egypt.

What separates a great tour operator from a good one is how they react during a problem. Detours handled it all.
This was my first tour with Detours and first group tour in more than 20 years. The experience was excellent. Everything was incredibly well organized. Brandon in the office responded quickly to all of my questions and concerns. Dan, our group leader, was the best. He was friendly and outgoing, but more importantly, well organized. We were traveling during the Covid 19 outbreak. The borders to Israel closed while we were in Jordan. Dan got this information from his local sources before it was announced. Because of this, we were able to rebook our return flights out of Jordan without too much problem. Detours booked a hotel for us in Amman for the last night. Detours - Dan handled it all calmly and without any drama. The guests did not have to do a thing. We completed our tour as planned. What separates a great tour operator from a good one is how they react during a problem. Detours handled it all.
The hotels, other than one, were all good to excellent. The hotel at the Dead Sea was fine, but a throwback to 1980. Hotels in Petra & Wadi Rum were particularly good. The local guides were all excellent. The private vans were comfortable.
The suggested additional budget of $750 - $1200 is too low. I don't think I splurged, but spent $2,200. I did not buy any expensive gifts-souvenirs, I maybe spent $200, max. I did go to more expensive dinners a few times - $200. The 3 extra day tours cost $400. Tipping for guides, drivers & leader was $300 for the 10 days. Transfer from airport to hotel $100. Other lunches, dinners & drinks all add up.
If I travel solo again, I would look into what trips Detours is offering.

All in all the trip was great value for money and I am already planning my next trip.
I am just back from the Thailand and Cambodia trip and had a great time. There were 15 guys on the trip which for me is just the right number. We all got along very well. The trip is well structured with 3 or 4 nights at each location. There were some included and some optional activities at each location. Internal flights and transfers were smooth and effortless. The local guides were a good mix of fun and information. All in all the trip was great value for money and I am already planning my next trip.

I had the BEST time of my life! No kidding. I was the only female and traveled the country of Costa Rica with 11 guys for 12 days. It was incredible. I travel a lot and I can say with certainty that this was one of my most favorite vacations ever! We were traveling over Christmas and New Years. It was absolutely like traveling with family. I refer to them as my vacation husbands :) And my birthday fell into the travel mix as well. The birthday celebration was also over the top! Excellent value! Easy to book the trip online. Great communication. You will never be disappointed with their service and quality of the tours.
First, my short version: I just completed my fourth trip with Detours and once again, it exceeded my very high expectations. It was a wonderfully organized trip with beautiful scenery, great hikes, and fascinating experiences. Miles runs a highly professional organization. From his nearly instantaneous responses to emails, preemptive information, and attention to detail; his consideration for his clients is superb.
PROS: Excellent value! Easy to book the trip online. Great communication. You will never be disappointed with their service and quality of the tours.
CONS: Time flew by too quickly.
Now for my long and detailed version: (be forewarned, I am a writer so I do my best to paint the most accurate picture I can.)
I feel it is only fitting that I begin my review of Detours Gay Adventure Travel with the Cambridge Dictionary definition of a detour. “An occasion when someone does something that is different from what is usual or expected.”
Booking my first tour with Detours and Miles in 2013 was EXACTLY that! While still a young company then, I happened across their website and what I saw struck a chord within my soul. Detours’ (and the owner, Miles Mitchinson’s) goal is to help travelers get to know a destination, appreciate the culture, and do things they may have never imagined. My previous travel preference leaned towards highly structured tours where I knew in advance each day’s timetable, etc.… To say I was making a complete 180 from my usual and comfortable travel planning is an understatement.
After a multitude of emails back and forth with Miles, I decided to not just swerve but rather jump onto the road less traveled and that single decision made all the difference. That initial trip ended up being the holiday of a lifetime – my Thailand adventure was without a doubt my favorite trip. Well, at least up until my next trip with Detours.
Before I get into my most recent adventure in New Zealand, here is something I want to point out. When you sign up for a Detours Trip, you must understand that just by the very nature of the company, you will not be traveling on a “highly structured” or 'luxurious' and “pampering” trip by the usual behemoth tour and travel company standards. I can best describe Detours as a Boutique travel agency. On second thought, “agency” is a must to cold a word; rather, a Boutique Travel Family that provides a personalized, professional, and fun approach to travel for discerning gay travelers.
In my humble opinion, the Detour’s approach offers many advantages, including the ability to travel with like-minded companions for an intimate experience with the local territory. The opportunity to enjoy meals at a communal table or at a family winery. The chance to fully immerse yourself in the local culture and landscape. The discovering of small, locally-owned hotels and operators which ensures that your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting. A wide range of daily options from doing nothing but relaxing by the pool to adrenaline-pumping activities to a local cooking class or wine tasting. No matter which itinerary you choose, each one is centered around fun and unique experiences.
As for my latest trip, 12 days in New Zealand, it was a dream come true. Not only did I see sights about which I had dreamed my whole life, but I also got to experience everything close-up and personal.
In planning the trip, both the owner (Miles) and Shane, emailed me clear explanations of the itinerary, answered all of my questions and made revisions, especially to accommodate my ever-changing schedule.
This was an amazing trip! Throughout our travels through New Zealand, we passed llamas, sheep, deer, villagers, glaciers, waterfalls, lakes, gorgeous forests, rolling hills, old farmhouses, Maori (indigenous Polynesian people), and so much more. We even visited Hobbiton Village made famous in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies.
There were so many highlights... our outstanding, kind, patient, amazing leader Shane!! What an absolute saint. He was so organized, insightful, and always attentive to the group. He had us laughing always. The other travelers from all over the world (who I must say did a great job of putting up with my send of humor throughout the trip). The amazing people (Kiwi’s) of New Zealand who are so generous with their history and culture. While there were a couple times the hiking was challenging but the views made it totally worth the effort. The Milford Sound area was rugged and open with varied terrain and breathtaking views for as far as the eye could see.
Honestly, the only way this trip could have been better was if I was being trained by Shane to become a new Trip Leader! All in all, this trip was a MUST DO. I’m already thinking of my next Detours journey.
Without hesitation, I can say the Road Less Traveled is life-changing.

Traveling with Detours will be one of your best decisions. Highly recommend!
Very simply, the trip with Detours was extraordinary! The itinerary that Miles and Brandon designed exceeded any ability to conduct all these activities on one’s own. Their extensive knowledge of Israel and Jordan surpassed my expectations. Their many personal connections provided opportunities for the group to learn more intimately about the sites visited. Miles and Brandon took amazing care of all of us and ensured we all had the time of our lives. A huge selling point is you are not obligated to do anything you don’t feel like doing. Highly recommend! I’m already thinking about where I’d like to go next!

I don't mind saying there were a few tears shed at the end of the trip. Such a wonderful experience.
Just got back from an amazing trip to Spain with Detours. I would recommend them wholeheartedly. They're highly responsive - including answering a slightly panicked email from me within 15 minutes at 9:00 on a Monday night. The trip itself was amazing. Dan was our tour leader and I couldn't have asked for a more knowledgeable, fun, and helpful person to lead us. I had some reservations about the open tour format - it felt like there would be a lot of open time for us to figure out on our own, but the reality is, they'll keep you going on as big or small itinerary as you want. And if you want to do everything, there's always good folks on the tour to join you. The group bonded straight away and we had a blast together. I don't mind saying there were a few tears shed at the end of the trip. Such a wonderful experience. I hope to take another Detours trip again in the near future.

I was on the Spain tour in 2019 and had a terrific time. Our trip leader, Dan, was really fabulous. He had amazing energy!
My husband and I have been on 16 tours, to-date. Most of them were with gay travel companies. How does Detours compare? VERY WELL.
The trip price is very reasonable. The hotels were very nice. Some of the other tour companies put us up in seedy hotels, but not Detours. He took us to amazing restaurants. Dan was extremely knowledgable about our Spain trip. He knew everything.
The excursions were really great. The company is very, very organized.

Thank you Miles, Shane, and especially you Dan for a wonderful trip
Just returned from the Spain 2019 tour. The tour, the arrangements, the excursions seemed to be tailor made for our group of 12
We stayed at charming hotels full of character and comfort. It was a four city tour. We had great choices of activities or the ability to choose our own path and our own time.
The greatest part of this experience was our guide Dan. He was able to handle 12 distinct personalities and make us feel safe and comfortable with each other and our different environments. He was knowledgeable and attentive to each and everyone of us.
This company was always available to answer any of my questions. They kept us updated through the entire process
Thank you Miles, Shane, and especially you Dan for a wonderful trip

Wow! Can't say enough good about Detours.
Wow! Can't say enough good about Detours. Just back from a fabulous trip to Greece. Miles (tour leader/owner) did a great job shepherding 16 of us to some of the best places around. The tour is designed so that the disparate group members get to know each other and that only added to the wonderful adventure! What a great group!! Every detail was taken care of; once I landed in Athens, didn't have to worry about a thing. Miles took great care of all of us and went out of his way multiple times to help folks. Accommodations and transportation were top notch; dining even better. If you're like me and Greece is on your bucket list, you can't get better value for you money. I can't wait to take my next Detours' excursion.

For those considering this tour... stop! Grab your wallet and book this trip ASAP, you won’t regret it!
Just returned from a detours trip to Greece with tour leader Brandon. I had a few reservations at first coming to tour (having being a younger participant) I wanted to make sure the tour is the right fit for me but Miles and Shane reassured me at first after a few quick online queries (thanks Miles & Shane). After meeting the group and our tour leader Brandon on day 1 in the hotel lobby, I instantly felt relieved and very excited as I felt an instant connection to the group. Brandon went over and beyond to ensure everyone was engaged and having a great time. From the restraurants bookings to the transport, everything felt seamless and very well organised (hats off to you Brandon!). The beauty about this tour is that you’re not confined to a prescheduled arrangement so it’s ok to detour from the tour! The highlight of the trip was driving around Milos in the ATV and getting lost in the island, so much so that I hired the ATV again in Mykonos to venture out on other parts of the island. For those considering this tour... stop! Grab your wallet and book this trip ASAP, you won’t regret it! 10/10!!!!

I had been dreaming of going to Greece for quite some time, and this trip exceeded my expectations.
This trip was really quite incredible and I loved every minute. The structure was absolutely perfect for me, getting to participate in wonderful group activities, but also have plenty of personal time. Brandon was also an absolutely terrific tour guide - great energy and always made sure everyone’s needs were looked after. I had been dreaming of going to Greece for quite some time, and this trip exceeded my expectations.

We will travel with Detours again and look forward to another adventure.
Highly Recommend Detours Travel. My husband and I traveled with Detours to Greece from Sept 14 to Sept 25 for our honeymoon. Our tour guide, Miles, who is the owner of Detours was outstanding and made sure that every detail was attended to. The hotels and transportation were exceptional and well thought out. The hotel staff were very accommodating and welcoming of our group of 17 guys (including Miles). The transportation ferries between islands were seamless. Miles had suggestions for the group each day, some structured and some not. He arranged a private tour guide in Athens to see and learn about the important ruins. On each island they had planned activities or suggestions that were available. It was our choice whether we wanted to participate or not. We quickly learned that we would get the most out of our trip if we participated in at least part of the day. This was a pleasure as the group of guys on our tour made the trip even more enjoyable.
A few highlights of the trip were the rented ATV’s on Milos. This was something we would not have thought to do on our own but what an amazing way to explore the island. Plus with Miles as our guide we saw parts of the island that we would not have seen any other way. Another highlight was a full day sailboat charter that allowed us to see the island from the sea. The boat and crew were amazing and even put up with all of our friendly banter with each other and them. Each of the three islands had its own charm and I feel that Detours helped us experience that. Staying on each island for a few days allowed us to explore local food and dining options. Miles always had a dinner reservation for a local restaurant that were accommodating to a group our size. We had some amazing food and dining experiences. Again there was no pressure to go with the group but we enjoyed catching up with the guys to hear what they did or saw during their unstructured exploration time.
On the second to the last day of the trip we asked Miles for a recommendation for a private honeymoon meal. Not only did he secure reservations but also arranged luxury transportation for an amazing farm fresh meal. It turned out that it was not exactly what he had planned for us but turned out even better than expected. I few guys on our trip had been on other tours with Detours and commented that the experience we had with Miles was similar to what they had with their other guides. We will travel with Detours again and look forward to another adventure.

I can give Detours my highest recommendation.
I was on the late September 2019 trip to Athens, Milos, Santorini and Mykonos. I can give Detours my highest recommendation. Our trip leader (not a guide) was Shane. He worked double time to make sure all our arrangements were made and we had plenty to keep us busy. But, if we wanted to go off on our own or hang at the hotel pool...we did. The group of 16 ranged in age from 30s to 60s. I participated or struck out on my own or with a friend as I felt. I’ve never traveled with a group before. It has its advantages and disadvantages. I enjoyed the easy social interactions. Having arrangements already made was a luxury. I would travel with Detours again. — Greece: I spent a couple of months learning basic Greek before I left and I’m glad I did. Greeks are blown away even if you can speak just a few words of their language. However, you can travel all through the Greek Islands and Athens’ tourist areas and never speak one word of Greek. Greek food is so phenomenally better in country then what you can get in the United States. It’s way more than gyros, moussaka, and baklava. I never felt unsafe in Greece although a friend got pickpocketed on the Athens metro so be aware. If you like big cities you’ll like Athens. There’s a lot of energy there. Milos is a calm, laid-back island. Go sailing! Santorini is stunning with its views but way overrated. It’s jampacked full of tourists even in the off-season. I had the lowest hopes for Mykonos. But, it turned out to be a fantastic island. And by all means check out the archaeological sites in Greece. Lastly, get to know Greek people. They are wonderful and a lot of fun.

We rate Detours Travel an A+! We absolutely will recommend your company to friends.
Our 12 day trip to Greece was outstanding. Detours far exceeded my expectations. Rather than simply traveling to a new place, we experienced an amazing adventure filled with gorgeous locations, incredible photos, unforgettable activities, fun travel companions, while providing inspiration for personal reflection and rejuvenation. It is by far one of the most favorite and memorable vacations – to put in in a Greek context – it was an epic odyssey!
First, I loved the Greece itinerary – it offered a multi-layered and comprehensive travel experience. Culture and history were the highlight of Athens. Authentic Greece with great outdoor activities in Milos. Breathtaking views and photo ops in Santorini. Beaches, Bars and Shopping in Mykonos. At all destinations there was great food, friendly people and fond memories.
Second, I have traveled on groups tours, with family and friends and set up my own travel plans. Detours does it the best! Some of the aspects that receive top marks include:
- Laid back approach – there is an itinerary of destinations – but what you do each day is up to you and the group. This is an ideal approach for me in travel. I want to have lots of options for things to do, but decide in a more spontaneous way how I wish to spend each day. BRAVO for this philosophy and execution.
- Affordability – the value vs cost was exceptional. If I had planned this trip on my own, it would have been double the price. Great accommodations and food at reasonable prices.
- Attention to detail – the transportation coordination of drivers and ferries was impeccable. Really knowing the interests of gay travelers was a big plus.
- Customized service – Any needs we had were met with a warm smile and a great solution.
Finally, our trip leader Shane was brilliant and made this trip a once in a lifetime adventure. His smile, outgoing personality, sense of adventure coordination and personal support was excellent. He was so inclusive and build a strong rapport with each traveler and created an environment for people to experience things together or supported them if they chose activities outside of the group. His presence added so much value to me (encouraging to try things I usually wouldn’t do) and taking extra steps to ensure my husband (who has some physical limitations) was safe and felt supported.
We rate Detours Travel an A+! We absolutely will recommend your company to friends. And we will book another Detours adventure (especially any led by Shane – Spain in October)!?!

The August 2019 Spain Tour with Detours was just amazing.
The August 2019 Spain Tour with Detours was just amazing. The tour leader James Langill was so kind and interested in helping us. He spent a lot of time making sure everyone was happy. We had plenty of time in each town to enjoy ourselves. Excellent lunches and dinners in restaurants with beautiful views. I'm sure I'll travel with Detours in the near future.

I have completed two Detours adventures and I give them my highest recommendation. The hotels, activities, and trip leaders are all top notch. The trips provide both structure and flexibility. With Detours, I boated to exotic islands in Thailand, zip-lined in the jungle, saw an authentic flamenco show up close in Spain, and completed many other unique and stimulating experiences. The trip leaders act as traveling concierges - answering all questions and arranging for private or small-group activities upon request.

Within days I felt so comfortable, so relaxed and had so many new friends.
Amazing trip, great group of guys I was initially a little worried about going on a group trip, not knowing anybody and being used to doing my own thing on holiday, but I signed up because every review was so positive. Well there’s a reason those reviews are so damn good! I had an amazing time on their Greece trip in June. Within days I felt so comfortable, so relaxed and had so many new friends. Detours offers such a flexible trip, which you can make your own and do the activities you want. You simply must do the mud bath on Santorini - your skin feels so good afterwards - and the ATVs on Milos are a highlight – exploring the hidden beauty of the island is awesome. As a vego, there were always options at the restaurants (occasionally a bit repetitive), and on Milos lots of amazing locally made cheeses. Shane is the greatest trip leader! He’s such a fun, easy going and experienced leader who really goes the extra mile to make your trip memorable. I’ll definitely be a repeat customer.

We just returned from the June Pride trip to Israel/Jordan with Miles and it blew my mind.
A lot of people have that "Bucket List" spot or "Dream Vacation" they've always wanted to do but sometimes the planning and logistics can get overwhelming and it remains just that...a dream. When we booked with Detours they took care of all the hard stuff and we were able to just relax and take in the beauty and energy of where we were. (and maybe take an epic selfie or two. haha) We just returned from the June Pride trip to Israel/Jordan with Miles and it blew my mind. It really is a special place on this Earth and Miles made sure we were all well taken care of and able to do all the activities we wanted. It didn't take long to bond with the fellow guys in the group and by the end it felt like you were travelling with friends you have known for years. I can't wait to go again.

Once again I am amazed by the organization and professionalism displayed by the Detours team.
Just returned from Peru, my second Detours trip. Once again I am amazed by the organization and professionalism displayed by the Detours team. My BF and I feel that the cost was very fair as it included the cost of domestic Peru flights, trains and ground travel. Additionally, the lodging was AWESOME... very nice properties with friendly staff and amenities. The trip leader, James was also superb. If you are reluctant about "Gay Group Travel".... don't be, you will have an awesome time!

We saw and did more than we ever could have done had we planned it ourselves.
This was our first trip with a tour group. We love to travel but have always travelled as a couple or with friends. The planning and details were amazing on this trip. We saw and did more than we ever could have done had we planned it ourselves. The group of friends we met were fantastic. Most importantly, our Trip Leader James, was a wonderful guy. He managed to organize 14 gay men every day and keep us enthused and informed. This trip was a great pleasure.

You NAILED IT! For that, I thank the Detours' team for a most amazing adventure, one we will remember and talk about for many years to come.
Going into it we knew it was going to be a great trip and certainly different than any of our previous travels, but it far exceeded all of my expectations. All of the accommodations, restaurants, and various activities were perfect. Dan was an amazing tour leader. He made it all so easy (for us). He was on top of everything and anticipated everything that was needed. He was so engaging and knowledgable. The entire trip was well structured, yet very flexible, which is how we like to travel.
I also would like to thank you and the rest of the Detours' staff for all the support and planning you provided. Going into initial planning of this trip we communicated a laundry list of expectations and desires, and had a LOT of questions throughout. You always provide very timely and thorough responses, even when I knew you were leading other trips. You NAILED IT! For that, I thank the Detours' team for a most amazing adventure, one we will remember and talk about for many years to come.

The South Africa trip with Detours was a dream trip beyond words.
A belated but HUGE thank you for a memorable trip. You guys are all amazing, in how you skillfully plan and orchestrate every aspect of the trip. Africa had been near top of my list for 5-6 years. The South Africa trip with Detours was a dream trip beyond words.
I will remember Dan's and Kyle's zest for life in foreign lands, and Shane's and Miles' patience for my pre-trip questions. The icing on the cake was how Dan imbued our experience with a big part of himself. In Greece it was the local relationships he'd cultivated; and in South Africa, his knowledge and respect for wildlife and the nuances of our relationship with wild animals.

THANK YOU for a great trip! You’ve easily gained another fan! :)
My buddy has been a fan of Detours for a while and he kept bragging about how much he had enjoyed the previous trips he had taken with you! I have to admit that I thought he was exaggerating a bit! Hahaha
But this totally exceeding my expectations! Everything was so well organized and even though we had so much planned, I never felt pressured to do anything I didn’t want to. I loved everything! I only missed a couple of trips because of my silly foot injury! And speaking of that, you should know how thankful I was to have Kyle there. Not only was he an excellent tour leader, but he was so helpful, genuine and compassionate! He accompanied me to the clinic and made sure I was well taken care of and stayed with me the entire time. And even after my entire ordeal he didn’t fail to get everything right. He managed to plan dinner for the group that night, as if everything was going according to plan. I don’t have enough words to thank him again for his help.
So THANK YOU for having Kyle as a tour leader, and THANK YOU for a great trip! You’ve easily gained another fan! :)

Thank you everyone at Detours for the wonderful experience touring Israel and Jordan. From booking the trip to the clear instructions prior to departure to the extraordinary professionalism of Miles Mitchinson - the entire experience was flawless. As a member of New York’s hospitality community, I’m aware of the elements that go into creating a successful experience. It was a great experience and I recommend them highly.
My husband and I just got back from Israel with Detours. It was a great experience and I recommend them highly. At first I was hesitant with the amount of "free time" we were given - despite that being a point of differentiation for Detours - because I am used to other tour companies having most of the time filled with set activities and I am generally too lazy to do much research ahead of time. Detours/Miles handled this by emailing me what we would see as part of the trip and what we wouldn't see so I could book additional arrangements as I wanted. Even better, Miles made himself available for long periods to assist us with making it to our preferred travel sites outside of the tour. Then each free day Miles would lead anyone who was interested on a group walking tour to see/eat/drink/enjoy the local ambiance. I enjoyed the way the group of fellow travelers mixed and blended so everyone got to see what they wanted and we got to know each other well. Good on you Miles, and good on Detours!

My partner and I returned from the S. Africa trip one week ago. It definitely was one of the most special trips we have been on. I cannot thank everyone at Detours enough. Miles and Shane for answering every and all inane questions we had before the trip. And Dan(and Kyle who was his apprentice) who made the trip special in every way. Dan had a vast knowledge of S. Detours did not disappoint!
My husband and I have never done an "organized" group vacation before, ie a cruise or a tour. We've always planned our own trips. And we didn't want to be stuck on a bus with someone with a clipboard and/or umbrella leading the way. But when we decided to go to South Africa, we wanted someone who knew the country to lead the way. Detours did not disappoint! The planning process, all done online, was seamless. Miles and Shane were responsive and answered every question and need. Our 12 days in South Africa and 4 days in Victoria Falls were amazing. And Dan Clarke, our tour leader, was fantastic. We joined the group activities we wanted to, and did our own thing when we wanted to. No pressure, no stress. And at the same time, we met 15 great guys who were easy to travel with, even with all of us having our own idiosyncrasies. I would recommend Detours, and look forward to another trip!

Our Detours trip not only met but exceeded our expectations.
Today is my first day back to the office and I want to take a moment and express our appreciation for a wonderful time in Costa Rica. Our Detours trip not only met but exceeded our expectations. Dan was an amazing guide (host) and ensured that everyone in our group was well taken care of. I am sure you have been told this many times before but in case not, I will share that I feel you are very fortunate to have Dan on the Detours team. Dan is patient, thorough, and caring for each and every guest. Although diverse, our group got along extremely well and I know a large part of this was because of Dan’s leadership.
The Costa Rica itinerary was well thought out and we enjoyed every stop along the way. All three stops were unique and enjoyable.

You decide how adventurous or relaxing you want your vacation to be.
I have been on two Detours Trips (Peru and Costa Rica) and would highly recommend this tour company to anyone looking for a LGBT+ friendly tour operator. The best part of being on a Detours trip is that you can just sit back and relax since you do not have to stress about planning the traveling logistics. Detours handles the hotel bookings, transportation between cities (and airport if requested), provides suggestions on optional excursions and work hard to create a fun and friendly atmosphere. With other tour companies you can spend half your trip on the bus; with Detours they really try and schedule the trip so guest spend the minimum amount of time on the bus. There were no 6 am morning wake up calls! Detours offers a lot of flexibility. At each destination Detours suggest the best activities each location has to offer. You decide how adventurous or relaxing you want your vacation to be. I really felt the tour leaders are striving to create a safe and fun trip for each guest.

Every step of the way, Detours makes each individual feel important without sacrificing the overall groups needs.
My husband and I just returned from 11 days in Israel and Jordan. We were hesitant at first about going with a small intimate group of strangers but after talking to Miles decided to book it. What a great decision! The group was amazing and we have lots of new friends. The itinerary was the perfect mix of active and down time. I wanted to go to Bethlehem which was not on the itinerary but Miles made it happen for me. Then, when the wait to see the birthplace of Christ was longer then people were willing to wait, Miles got me to the front of the line! Every step of the way, Detours makes each individual feel important without sacrificing the overall groups needs. After a few days in Jerusalem the perfect relaxation was provided. We spent an afternoon floating in the Dead Sea. Next it was off to the amazing beaches and nightlife of Tel Aviv, so much fun. The experience in the Wadi Rum desert is like nothing I can describe, best I can do is; "out of this world". Petra is a must see for all and who can turn down a camel ride experience! Although we were privileged to have Miles as our tour leader, Dan also joined us. What a great guy Dan is, I wouldn't hesitate to book a trip lead by him. In fact, I'd have no hesitation to book any trip with Detours. Now that we are home, we are already considering our next trip with Detours.

As my 7th trip with Detours, it rounds out a varied set of tours on 5 continents. Thank you Detours for such wonderful tours!
This was a very inspirational trip. The sights of Jerusalem were amazing. The walled Old City is full of historic and religious venues we've all heard about all our lives. The tour guide Lior made this very real for us all. Then next came the trek to the Dead Sea via Masada. Everything you've heard about the Dead Sea is true. You can't help but float as you soak in such salty waters! Tel Aviv was next on the journey and did not disappoint. Beautiful beaches and great food at every turn. Now on to my favorite part of the trip, Petra! This site is so amazing and so awe inspiring, it has to be experienced to be believed. The ending of this trip was a night spent under the stars in the desert surroundings of Wadi Rum. The tent accommodations were pleasant and had all modern conveniences. A trip through the desert in open vehicles was fun and the camel ride was... interesting to say the least. All in all, this is a very special trip, one I am so glad I was able to take. As my 7th trip with Detours, it rounds out a varied set of tours on 5 continents. Thank you Detours for such wonderful tours!

I’m still on a high when I look through the photos.
We were on the September 18 Greece trip with Shane and I’m still on a high when I look through the photos. It was some of the small touches that just brought the trip to a new level. EG- having him show us the best spot to catch the sunset then having dinner reservations ready for us afterwards or chartering our own boat so we could bring our own drinks, play our own music, and really just bond with our fellow detours family. I’m still not even over the jet lag from this one but already looking forward to our next trip with detours in June.

This a great tour company! I have traveled with them twice and both trips were fantastic. The tours are well organized, but there is a lot of flexibility and don't need do all the group activities and explore on your own. The leader are great and very helpful. I highly recommend Detours.

I will certainly go on future trips with Detours.
It was my first trip traveling with Detours. I went on the Croatia trip. The trip was well-organized and I enjoyed meeting all members of the group. As group leader, Miles was amazing. He was extremely pleasant to know, made every effort to include all members of the group and was extremely helpful in all aspects of the trip. I will certainly go on future trips with Detours.. Thank you

I just finished my FIFTH trip with Detours and, once again, I had an amazing time!
I just finished my FIFTH trip with Detours and, once again, I had an amazing time! Every trip I have taken with Detours has been an incredible experience and the guides work very hard to make sure everyone in the group enjoys their vacation. I have traveled to Costa Rica, Peru, South Africa, Thailand and most recently Croatia with Detours and I am looking forward to my next trip in 2019 (not sure where that will be yet.) If you are considering Detours for your next vacation, I highly recommend booking your trip today! I guarantee you they won't disappoint. Thanks Miles for another incredible trip!

This was by far the best travel experience!
Detours is amazing! I would describe my recent trip with them to Croatia as “structured flexibility.” Miles, our trip leader, was excellent at handling the details of the trip while allowing us a group to make choices along the way. He was great at ensuring everyone had the information they needed—from dinner plans to one-off requests. This was by far the best travel experience!

This was our first tour with Detours and we would do it again!
What a great tour! This was our first tour with Detours and we would do it again! James was amazing - he looked out to ensure that the group was getting what they wanted out of the tour and he was very helpful! Helped us ensure we got to see what we wanted to see. Detours selected great hotels, great options for activities and ensured we had a blast! I highly recommend Detours for your next vacation.

I write this review with so much gratitude...
I completed the August 2018 Spain tour and I wanted to take this opportunity to compliment James and the entire Detours team for a trip of the lifetime!
When I Googled “Gay group travel,” Detours came up, and I appreciated all the detail on the website. I liked how Miles answered my questions honestly and succinctly, so I booked in early June. To be completely honest, I was not 100% sure what to expect. I went on a non-LGBT group trip in Summer 2016 that was poorly organized and did not provide participants with the quality James and Detours provided.
I arrived in Barcelona alone on a Sunday morning and went to the RoomMate Carla where I was allowed to check in at 9 am. The quality of the RoomMate is excellent and it was a great first impression of what Detours provides its customers.
Rather than run through the entire itinerary, I will mention some highlights. When I came down to our 4 PM meeting, I was anxious. Would I like the other guys? Would I simply tolerate them or would I dislike them? James’s warm personality made all 11 of us feel at ease immediately. From the beginning, I was impressed with how James gave the group an excellent overview of what to expect, Detours policys, and more information. The “freestyle” trip culture allowed for people to do what they wanted when they wanted without anyone feeling excluded.
James’s knowledge of the various restaurants, bars, excursion providers and other vendors, and relationships with their staff afforded our group excellent treatment for 12 days. James explained to us what to expect next during our brief bus rides to the airports and other destinations, so everyone could plan their time appropriately.
As I told James during the trip, this was not just a trip of a lifetime but an experience of a lifetime because I had 12 days with a bunch of other men completely comfortable in their skin 24 hours a day. I am writing this message on a Google Doc during my flight home, and I am dreading a return to reality. As James explained from the beginning, he is a traveling concierge, facilitating all the group members’ desires. I’m confident I speak for the whole group in that we all have nothing but praise for Detours and James.
I write this note with so much gratitude that I went on a Detours trip and a strong sense of gratitude for James and his colleagues that worked behind the scenes to ensure a successful vacation for all of us. Even though we all have busy professional lives at home, we all quickly escaped to the Detours experience. When I return home, I’m pretty sure I’m going to embrace my inner authentic self like James modeled - “doing me” and taking lots of fun, cute selfies along the way.

12 Days in Peru - (August 4, 2018)
...the trip itself was superb - wonderfully executed.
My partner, Richard, and I just returned from a wonderful trip to Peru with Detours, my first Detours experience, his second. We had great weather for Machu Picchu, Cusco, Paracas and the Nasca Lines, enjoyed the hotels, from Lima to the Valle Sagrado, and experienced some excellent Peruvian food - even had a surprisingly wonderful cooking class (thanks Chris!) We managed the high altitudes well and enjoyed the challenges of all of our activities. It was an extremely active and fascinating tour, very well planned, and very diverse.
The people we met on the tour were an interesting group, with varied backgrounds and turned out to be great travel partners. We met several who we will continue to see, proud to call them friends.
Then there was our tour leader, James. What a excellent man. His energy, commitment to Detours and our successful travel experience, and kindness helped make it one of the best vacations I've ever had. He has a great sense of humor and an insightful awareness of the needs of his charges and he loves to travel, a love which boosted our appreciation of what we were undertaking.
I only corresponded with Miles but I felt taken care of in preparation for our trip thanks to him and the trip itself was superb - wonderfully executed.

My 6th foray into the World of Detours... If you haven't experienced Detours yet, just do it. Do it now!
Detours has been my go to choice for unique travel experiences for the last 5 years. My 6th foray into the World of Detours was a trip I had waited 5 years to take, because of time restrictions at work. And it was definitely worth the wait! The diverse chaos and sensory overload of Bangkok to the quiet nights under the stars in Khao Yai,
the contrasts and diversity of this stunning country offers something for everyone. This trip gave a sense of discovery to not only a new country, but to one's self. Learning one's own limits, and then pushing them was possible here with no judgement. The people are so helpful and polite in every situation. They have an eagerness to please in any capacity. Each hotel selected by Detours was first rate! Luxurious pools and spas, exquisite restaurants and night life were always just a few steps away. The beaches of Railay and Phuket are in a league unto themselves. All the impossible stories of this country are true, and then some. My travel companions were as diverse as this trip. Close and lasting friendships were forged with ease. That, I have found, is a pleasant byproduct of the Detours experience. Our trip Leader Shane has a wealth of knowledge of this country that he eagerly shared. His guidance and openness to try new activities made for a very enjoyable time together. If you haven't experienced Detours yet, just do it. Do it now!

This trip surpassed by expectations! Thank you!!
What an amazing adventure! I was very apprehensive about traveling with a group of people that I knew nothing about, in a country that I had never traveled to. But wow, it was an incredible experience, and I am already looking at future trips! Shane is absolutely fantastic and I could not have asked for a better trip! This trip was a perfect mix of fun and relaxation, and I love the flexibility in the schedule for those of us that like a little 'alone time' here and there. This trip surpassed by expectations! Thank you!!

...a great trip at a great value! Looking forward to my next trip with Detours!!
Traveling with Detours is a great experience! Even if you don't know anyone else in your tour group beforehand, you instantly have a sense of community with your LGBT brethren from the minute you first meet up. What I also love about the tours is that they take the guess work out of where you need to go. The tour guides are super knowledgeable about where you are visiting and provide a sense of security in unfamiliar territory. I have been on two tours now with Detours, one to Spain and on to Greece and for good reason. Both have been truly great experiences that I would recommend to anyone in the LGBT community (or allies) for a great trip at a great value! Looking forward to my next trip with Detours!!

I absolutely would recommend Detours to anyone. It is great value for money and a super way to travel to parts new and unfamiliar.
I just completed an amazing tour of South Africa (june-july 2018) with Detours and Super Adventure Leader, Miles (Daddy). The tour was well organized with lots of flexibility to Pick your Own Adventure. Miles clearly loves SA and had many great suggestions for us to choose from on the days where nothing was planned. The hotels were all top quality and clean, if not always conveniently located! The logistical portions of the trip (moving between sites etc) was well organized, comfortable and on time. The group clicked right away and I think will stay in touch long after the trip. I absolutely would recommend Detours to anyone. It is great value for money and a super way to travel to parts new and unfamiliar.

This was my first tour with Detours and it was all I could have hoped for.
I participated in the tour of Greece June 2 to 13 this year. This was my first tour with Detours and it was all I could have hoped for. The Detours staff went out of their way to help me secure the travel dates I wanted. Once there, the accommodations were beautiful, and the transportation between islands were almost seamless. I was also very fortunate to have been travelling with a terrific group of guys, lead by the amazing Dan, our GAL (Global Adventure Leader -- he said he's the one who came up with the acronym!) who never failed us at any turn. I was impressed at his ability to multi-task, yet make everyone feel like he he was giving them his individual attention. Anything you needed, he was there to help you in whatever way necessary. Add that to his knowledge of Greece, being adored by all of his contacts, and being an all-around great guy, it was a pleasure to have been part of his last tour group in Greece (for now!). I look forward to my next tour with Detours!

He definitely made sure we (the full group) were enjoying ourselves and seeing all of the amazing country that we could. The trip was seamless which is saying a lot given the multiple transportation methods at each location and between the islands.

Tim and I just returned from the most fantastic vacation we have ever experienced.
Tim and I just returned from the most fantastic vacation we have ever experienced. This was our first trip with Detours and it will not be our last. We are now planning on when we can do Thailand or another destination. The service and professionalism from the office staff and from our Trip Leaders, Dan Clarke and Shane Bingham was most excellent. I am sure that Miles was finally glad that our plane landed as the delays were numerous flying into Athens. The transportation arranged from the airport was there and we were whisked off to the hotel as if we had landed on time. Dan Clarke had to adlib as the trip was happening due to the rule changes on Milos and not being able to rent the ATV's for our group. You wouldn't have known that there were any changes to the plans as everything was flawless. The new friends we made on this trip will be with us for ever. The group of men we met and traveled with were all a delight to be with. Detours had the most comfortable hotels booked for us and the excursions were excellent. Thank you to Miles, Dan and Shane.

...it will become an amazing experience wherever they take you.
This was my first Detours Travel tour--8 days in Peru. If you are looking for a "clipboard tour" where the guide is ticking off things to do on a list, then this "event" is not for you. Our guide, the wonderful and patient Miles, made a point of getting to know us individually. He was relaxed and accommodating throughout. He listened to feedback and appeared to never be phased by anything. He has a genuine love for what he does and it translates to all who are lucky to be in his orbit, as well as those he has trained for other tours. By the end of our time together, I felt I was hanging out with friends. That is not a clipboard tour; it is a familial, and jovial and bonding experience--one which I never expected when I signed up. I would not hesitate to try another tour with Miloš (as I started calling Miles by the end of the trip). I was so impressed with him as a person and as a fun coordinator--unflappable, funny, decent, kind, responsive and very open. Book your tour with Detours today--it will become an amazing experience wherever they take you.

...I must say this adventure was utterly fantastic!
I just returned from the Spain trip (hosted by Dan Clarke) and I must say this adventure was utterly fantastic! I quickly became friends with some fun travel companions—the sights were amazing—the accommodations relaxing—and the weather perfect. Dan was an exceptional tour guide. He often took us on daily excursions away from the busy tourist areas which was greatly appreciated. The photo ops were many—I just downloaded 1,400+ images which I will be posting as soon as I am finished curating! Stay tuned...

Our trip leader could not have cared more for each one of us, as individuals... Thanks, Detours!
When I signed up with Detours, I knew that I would have quite the experience in Thailand: hotels, transportation, and a knowledgeable guide to ensure that I got a "taste" of Thailand. I had no idea that I would also meet an incredible group of 15 other male travelers! Together we laughed, toured, experienced, discussed, and drank our way through temples, beaches, boats, and cities. Our trip leader could not have cared more for each one of us, as individuals. Shane, you truly brought the heart to this adventure. Thanks, Detours!

There are just too many "WOW" moments to list. Once again thanks Detours!
My trek through South Africa was an amazing adventure! This was my 5th trip with Detours, and although it's hard not to have expectations, this trip went far and above any I could have had. The fellow travelers and the trip leader Dan made for a close group of friends to share it all with. I am so glad Detours offered this excursion into a world of wildlife and relevant history worth experiencing. The adrenaline just surged at the sight of the "big five" as well as the up close and personal encounter with great white sharks. There are just too many "WOW" moments to list. Once again thanks Detours! See you in Thailand in July!

I am now planning all the other places I want to visit with Detours and I expect those experiences to be just as memorable as my first Detours tour!
Last year when a friend suggested I try Detours for a trip to South Africa, I checked out their website, was suitably impressed, and after Miles quickly answered several questions I had, I booked a tour (Africa, March 2018). I have just returned from this tour and I must say I was more than happy I went with Detours. The organization of the tour, the quality of the trip, the nice friendly group of 15 guys, the personable, knowledgeable and efficient tour leader - all these added to a most memorable experience. At first I wasn’t sure how a tour with many daily optional activities would actually play out. Turns out, it was a perfect fit for what I was seeking! Each day Dan, the leader, would list upcoming suggested options for the next day or two, and he would do any necessary bookings, as well as suggest places to eat or bars to visit. If one were not interested in these activities, Dan would come up with other suggestions; there was no pressure to stay with the majority decision. It actually turned out that the entire group did most activities together! So Detours allows one to choose which activities one is interested in doing (or not), while having companionship if desired, for meals or for these activities. For me, this was just what I wanted - a way for me to travel without detailed planning of transportation, places to stay or the actual itinerary, while having new friends to share experiences with and not feel alone, especially in a strange city! I am now planning all the other places I want to visit with Detours and I expect those experiences to be just as memorable as my first Detours tour!

Would we do another Detours adventure? Absolutely! We’re already planning our next destination.
Africa had eluded us for sometime, until we learnt about the Detours itinerary to South Africa which included Cape Town, the Winelands and Kruger National Park. The fact that Detours is a gay company was all the better and this would be their fifth time in South Africa since starting their tours there in early 2017. There were fifteen men in the group, the max for a Detours’ adventure and this included a majority from the USA, a few from Canada and ourselves from Australia. We soon learnt from fellow traveller Stanley, a veteran Detour devotee who had completed all the available itineraries, this travel package came ‘with options’ which we discovered was one of its best features. If we wanted to participate in planned activities like day excursions, dinner each evening and visits to bars, all well and good. However, if we wanted to do something different, Dan offered his help by suggesting, researching and planning an alternative activity so we all achieved maximum enjoyment. Or we could opt to do nothing at all and relax in the comfort of the hotel. Would we do another Detours adventure? Absolutely! We’re already planning our next destination.

Just finished a tour with Detours Travel to Costa Rica for 12 days over xmas and new year's. Had a wonderful time. I traveled by myself and paid the extra money to have my own room. Regardless of your destination, you can't go wrong with Detours.
A great way to travel with 12-15 strangers who truly become close friends after 12 days of sharing amazing experiences together. You immediately connect with gay travelers (mostly men) who come from all parts of the world, both singles and couples in all age ranges. Provided are ground transportation, hotels, some tours, and a guide who is outgoing & locally knowledgeable. There is an outline itinerary, usually spending 2-3 days in each city, but activities are flexible and can be customized to your taste. Not super structured, allowing you to go with the flow. The group often breaks off to do separate activities that appeal one another. I've done Thailand and Costa Rica. Thailand a unique experience in culture, surroundings, night life. Costa Rica cool if you prefer outdoor adventure, waterfalls, beaches, etc. Regardless of your destination, you can't go wrong with Detours. Miles, James, Dan, & Shane all equally do a great job to make sure everyone is taken care of at all times during your the trip.

We had such a great time, that we have already booked the Detours trip to South Africa in January.
My husband and I were on the November 2017 Thailand 15-day trip. This was our first trip with Detours, and it exceeded our expectations in every way. We really enjoyed sharing the experience with the other guys—everyone got along very well, and we always looked forward to sharing the day’s experiences with the group over dinner. The accommodations were first-rate, including staying in a luxury treehouse. The activities were interesting and varied, and you always had the option of doing something else if you didn’t like a particular activity. The trip leaders, Shane and Miles, were very sensitive to each person’s interests and needs, and the trip was very well organized. It was comforting to turn over the logistical details to them. We had such a great time, that we have already booked the Detours trip to South Africa in January. We would most highly recommend Detours to anyone who wants a first-class experience at a very reasonable price. Thanks Shane and Miles!

Wow!! What an AMAZING time we had.
My husband and I just returned from Spain with Detours Travel. Wow!! What an AMAZING time we had. This was our first experience with Detours Travel, so we really did not know what to expect. The hotel accommodations were very nice and centrally located. Our tour leader Dan was UNBELIEVABLE. He was very knowledgeable about each location we were in. He would suggest sights and activities in each location and make sure that each person on the tour got to do what they wanted to do. The difference between Detours Travel and other tours that I have been on is that on other tours you have to stick to the itinerary. With Detours Travel you can pick and choose what you want to do. You can do as much or as little as you want to do. There is nothing that Dan would not have done to make sure that we were enjoying ourselves. The amount of coordination and professionalism that Dan provided was very impressive. He picked moderately priced restaurants that were very good. He took us on great hikes, bike rides, walking tours of the cities, sunsets on roof top decks for panoramic views. Almost forgot to mention, that there were 14 people on the tour. 14 people who started out as strangers and that are now friends. The tour of Spain was an experience of a lifetime. We are looking forward to travelling with Detours Travel to all of their other destinations.

We are already looking forward to our next Detours vacation to Costa Rica
We recently returned from Greece which was our third Detours vacation (also Spain and Peru). The Greek Isles are spectacularly beautiful and Detours made sure we saw all the amazing places Greece has to offer. Even more amazing was how easy Detours made it all possible. Just wake up in the morning and choose from a wide range of exciting adventures. Even more amazing was Miles our tour leader. He made it a point to get acquainted with all in our group and made sure we were all enjoying ourselves (he’s cute too). The other guys on the tour were awesome. We made many new friends. Most of us are now friends on Facebook and making plans to see each other in the future. We are already looking forward to our next Detours vacation to Costa Rica for Christmas and New Years.

Detours created a five star experience for me and so I am giving them five stars in return.
The Detours travel experience was absolutely amazing. Wonderful travel mates, fun adventures/activities, the most breathtaking views EVER, and great dining options made for some terrific memories of my first trip to Greece. Hotel accommodations were excellent as were the restaurants selected for lunch/dinner. Every activity, including lunches/dinners, was optional and so participants could do as much/little as they wanted. Of course, spending time with my travel mates seeing the beautiful sights, learning about the culture, sharing meals together, and learning about each other is what made the Detours experience unique and life enhancing. Venturing out of my comfort zone for just a little bit allowed me to be part of something really special. Detours Travel created a five star experience for me and so I am giving them five stars in return.

I don't know where to begin but I want to thank you for accommodating me to the Costa Rica trip. It was a trip of my life I will never forget. How do you guys do it? It was flawless in every single way, I had 12 days of pure bliss with the new friends I have made in a country I've never been before. It was PERFECTION! The birthday cake surprise with a full crew singing happy birthday in spanish was an unexpected addition to the trip. I almost cried. Drama! Thank you!
James has been super amazing. I have never met such a beautiful soul. Actually, me and a few guys from the costa rica trip are planning on a mini reunion by joining one of his tours in Peru next year. Watch out!

We travel often but have never experienced a tour that comes close to our vacations planned by Detours.
We just finished our 2nd Detours vacation (Peru) and although our expectations were it couldn't be any better than the first (Spain), we were so happy it turned out to be every bit as enjoyable if not more so. Our tour guide (James) was awesome. Not only was he very knowledgeable but his attention and concern for each of us on the tour was so unexpected. We travel often but have never experienced a tour that comes close to our vacations planned by Detours. Just bring your clothes and toothbrush and ALL arrangements are personally and professionally handled by the Owner (Miles) and his AWESOME Tour Leaders (Dan, Shane and James). The groups are small enough so that the owner and tour leaders make it a point to get to know everyone and ensure all are welcome and well taken care of. Also, we have made several new friends from around the world that were on the tour. If you are use to a tour leader carrying a flag and leading tourists like cattle from site to site, you will be pleasantly surprised by the comradery and personal attention that DETOURS graciously provides. In about 3 weeks we will be taking our 3rd DETOURS vacation and we couldn't be more excited!

Had the most amazing time travelling with Detours that I booked another trip before I finished my first one.
Definitely real, buckets of fun. Totally brilliant. Had the most amazing time travelling with Detours that I booked another trip before I finished my first one. Everything was organised perfectly. My trip to Peru has been the best group travel experience of my life to date! Our tour leader James is second to none and the guys I travelled with are amazing humans. Big thanks to Detours and big bear hugs to the Peru Crew of July 17.

Thank you again Detours and Miles for an amazing experience.
A big thankyou to Miles for such an awesome trip to Thailand. We had a great crowd and Miles has happy to run around to make sure we had a stress-free time. He was happen to accomodate our needs and provide an awesome experience. Even when someone had to go to hospital (they had slipped on a step at the pool) Miles was there to make sure that everything went smoothly.
The locations were great and the new itinerary worked like a treat. This was my first gay trip (as I've done mixed trips before) and the atmosphere was fun and relaxed. Thank you again Detours and Miles for an amazing experience.

I went with an open mind and open heart and I truly had a wonderful time and met some great new friends
I had a wonderful trip with Detours. I truly did. Now I have a couple of moments to reflect on it all. I wasn't sure what to expect but I went with an open mind and open heart and I truly had a wonderful time and met some great new friends. I would absolutely recommend, and have, Detours to anyone. I hope to take another trip soon.
Dan was an amazing trip leader. So patient. Friendly. Accommodating. Fun. He really did an excellent job with managing 15 different personalities and truly handled everything with ease, or as it seemed, though I am sure it's a lot of work 24/7 trying to keep everyone happy as well as organizing everything from food to laundry. He deserves a lot of credit for how well the trip flowed from tickets, excursions, events, etc etc etc.
I think the greatest aspect I loved was that I didn't have to think about anything. I just had to show up. Dan organized everything and I didn't have to worry about tickets, getting there, where to meet, what time, finding my way, dinner, etc etc etc. Not having to think about anything but drinking, food, talking, laughing, etc was so nice! My stress each day was when to have a beer and what time to wake up. Just what I wanted, yet I saw and did so many things over the 12 days without lifting a finger, except to have a drink, lol.
I thought the itinerary was very good. The cities, the churches, historic things to see, walks, bike tours, beach. planes, trains and buses. It was great and very well organized with each city visit.
Overall, I had an amazing trip and hope to book again soon.

We would highly recommend traveling with Detours to anyone!
My partner & I just returned from a 12 day trip to Greece with Dan as our leader. We have been to Europe on group ski trips a few times over the past decade so we are used to traveling this way and have also traveled Europe just the two us a number times as well. I have nothing but high praise for Dan our tour leader, and we are considering taking another Detour's trip in 2018. The tours on the islands were fun and worthwhile, we did most of the activities but never felt pressure to join and occasionally carved out time for ourselves. The group was composed of very interesting men from differing backgrounds and we shared many laughs and great meals with them. There was also a group of us that sampled the nightlife together on a regular basis which was great fun. We would highly recommend traveling with Detours to anyone!

Have I used 'amazing', 'incredible', 'great', too much? Well it is.
Just completed my third, and certainly not last, Detours trip. I've done three trips in less than 10 months and have been guided by all four of the 'GALS'; Miles, James, Shane, and Dan. In Greece we had both Miles and Dan and I joked besides doing a trip review I can now rate them. There is no way to, like any person, they all have a personality, but when it comes to taking care of you they are all fully professional and whoever you are with you are in over 100% guidance and information. Greece was a bit more intricate than my previous trips, (Costa Rica and Thailand) as you take ferries from Athens through the islands and eventually back to Athens. They had the times, tickets, and everything you need taken care of without ever having to worry. And any problem you may have they take care of you one-on-one, while also looking after the group which is basically up to 15 other guys. This is more of a testament about Detours so I just focused on them. But as far as the trip went it was amazing, somewhere I have always wanted to visit since I was 10 years old and finally did it at 53. All of the history of Athens and the monuments/museums, the 'small town' family ambience of Milos, the absolute beauty of Santorini, and the fun of Mykonos; I'm not a late night party guy anymore but I guess it was a wild time for some. We did have some rain, even hail, but it never started before we had completed our designated visit. The most friendly people ever. An incredible trip, and if you go, absolutely arrive a week early or stay a week later and visit a few other islands or even other places on the mainland. The pre-paid airport transfers were flawless and the hotels they pick have the nicest friendliest staff. You'll definitely be seeing me in Peru or South Africa next year. And the restaurants we ate in were beyond amazing. Two boat cruises around Milos and Santorini were incredible. Have I used 'amazing', 'incredible', 'great', too much? Well it is. We originally had a group of 15, but it was so popular they doubled the trip. We were all together in Athens at the beginning and end but split into two 14 or so person groups for the majority. Very personal. If you have never done a Detours trip, do it, I've done it 3 times and loved it!

This was by far one of the best group trips I have done and hope to be able to do another one in the not too distant future
I was on your May 2017 Greece trip with Dan. I can only provide you with positive feedback of the whole experience. Dan is an excellent guide and makes time for everyone on the trip and has patience with all of us. He was extremely helpful in arranging a late check out for me at the Athens hotel as my flight was close to midnight, and I think he forfeited a late checkout for himself in favour of me!
The entire trip had that relaxed feeling about it and even when things went wrong such as the delay in ferry departure no one seemed concerned as Dan was there to sort it all out. The accommodation was perfect in my opinion and I felt that the choice of islands that we visited was well thought out as all are different in their own way. All the activities from the pirate boat cruise, the ATV vehicles on Milos (my favourite island) and the hiking that Dan encouraged were well chosen and much enjoyed.
This was by far one of the best group trips I have done and hope to be able to do another one in the not too distant future. Hopefully I have been able to sell my county to the guys on the trip and I think a few of them are seriously considering doing the South Africa trip in the future. I must also thank you once again for your patience and assistance with my visa requirements etc when I booked my trip earlier this year. I heard other guys on the trip also comment on how impressed they were (and in some cases the reason why they booked with Detours) with the prompt responses to their emails and I do believe that is one of Detours most valuable attributes.

It far exceeded our expectations and it will definitely will not be our last.
Thank you Detours for the awesome time we had on the May 2017 Spain tour. It far exceeded our expectations and it will definitely will not be our last. In fact, we've already registered for the September 2017 Greece tour. We especially enjoyed the group activities and dinners. Those that wanted to do their own thing (very few) were welcome to do so. Our tour leader was Dan and he was super. He made each of us feel important and comfortable. Miles (the owner) was helpful from the beginning to the end regarding our accounts and travel details.

...my hopes were more than met by the inaugural Detours Travel trip to South Africa.
"Winelands, Wild Animals, Winds of The Cape"--South Africa
As a veteran traveler, I seek the challenges of diversity, culture, adventure in a foreign land and my hopes were more than met by the inaugural Detours Travel trip to South Africa. My title captures all the W's for Wins in this wondrous adventure that explored the winelands of Parrl (reminiscent of California Central Valley) where you will learn a lot traveling to vineyards, Then there were the safaris, most notably to famed Kruger National Park (the size of New Jersey) where we were fortunate in seeing all the major WILD animals, highlighted by the elusive leopard who dramatically posed on top of an anthill for us. I was thrilled to see Cape Hope, the cliffs, pounding waves, black penguin colony, rugged landscape in a national park. Capetown is one of the "coolest" seaport towns I have ever experienced with endless activities and friendly people. Then the unanticipated surprises--visiting an elephant sanctuary and touching all parts of the elephant, visiting one of the world's largest canyons, Blyde River Canyon Nature Preserve, and getting to feed the vultures at the Mohotoholo Wildlife Sanctuary and the opportunity to see diverse parts of the South African landscape--savannahs, mountain rages, desert, rivers, shoreline, beaches, farmland, vineyards, and, of course, Tabletop Mt. National Park.
Balmy sunny weather, fine hotels, delicious food (inexpensive...and best burgers anywhere).
The key element of all of this were our two dedicated, caring, skillful, charming, energetic, helpful trip leaders, Miles and Dan, who admirably strived that each individual had the best possible trip.

...my advice is to go for it. I couldn't ask for anything more.
Great Trip! Great travel service to do business with. If you are like me, a bit hesitant to book a tour from a company I found on the web - my advice is to go for it. Detours is easy to do business with, very responsive to any questions or concerns and I had a great trip! I couldn't ask for anything more. Our adventure leader, James, did a great job of making sure everyone in the group had a great trip and took care of any request that came up along the way. I look forward to booking another adventure with Detours in the near future.

I'd recommend Detours whether your going solo or as a couple.
I just returned from a 12 day tour of Costa Rica with Detours. There were 10 of us on the tour plus our enthusiastic and affable tour leader, James. James is a very considerate and thoughtful tour leader, surprising one of the group members with a birthday cake during a sunset cruise. The itinerary offered a lot of flexible excursions for all skill levels including jet-skiing, horseback riding, jet-boarding, ATV tour, snorkeling, etc. Although the wifi was a bit slow in a couple of the accommodations, they were clean and modern. We even had our own private villa for a few days complete with pool, hot tub, etc., which was nice. We checked out a couple of the gay bars while in San Jose and always had plenty of time to venture off on our own if we wanted to. I'd recommend Detours whether your going solo or as a couple.

I would never hesitate to go with Detours again... I'm going to Greece in June '17 and hopefully onto Peru and elsewhere later on
What an amazing and adventurous time. I have done gay cruises through (company names removed) before, but Detours was my first ever gay adventure trip. I first did Costa Rica in August 2016 with Miles and James and said then if I loved this I will immediately be signing up for more, including this Thailand trip over the New Year's period with Shane, and coming to Greece in June '17 with Dan, which is now so popular the group is now split into two with Miles also coming along. But this review is about Thailand New Years '16-'17. First off, signing up, the airport transfers (both ways), extra hotel nights, and all other arrival/departure logistics were handled flawlessly. On the first official evening we all met together with Shane and we all got our initial introductions as Shane announced we would all go out for drinks, a surprise complimentary Thai massage, dinner, a local tour around the immediate area, then dinner, and one of many shows you probably won't tell your parents about. The base hotel we were in for the start, and end, the Amara, was first class. Shane got all of us set-up on a private Dropbox account to chat together about anything and he was always available at the drop of a hat to answer any concerns, questions, etc... anyone would have. We travelled around either through tour vans, tuk-tuks, or taxis, and sometimes to some locales we took ferries for which all the tickets were taken care of. Ferries were how we traveled eventually from Bangkok to Koh Samui, as well as onto Koh Phanangan. While visiting historic and cultural sights we enlisted an absolutely loving and beautiful young lady Yeli who guided us through the many sights we saw and you could tell she was just not reading a script, she knows and loves what saw was showing us a nd gave so many insights into the history and lives of her country, at least for me, I found fascinating. Thanks to Yeli, Shane, and the many overly friendy locals and hotel employees, getting around, or figuring out a different/distinct culture was quite simple. Unlike some trips I have taken in the past where everything is planned ahead of time, Detours lets you do what you want, and feel like doing. Shane introduced us to the BTS Skytrain. We took it on New Year's eve to get to our rooftop party. I will have to be critical that I felt it was not all it was hyped up to be. Somewhat underwhelming, but still fun, not Shane's fault at all. Thailand is a country which actually relishes their King, who had recently passed away and the entire country observe s a year of mourning, so there were no fireworks or overwhelming celebrations. It was still a fun evening, don't let me sound like a downer. Just the organization of the facility itself. Moving on.
While in Phangan most of went on a 3+ hour hike. Afterwards we got down to the beach and had a great lunch.
We later flew to Phuket for our final destination before returning back to Bangkok. Wonderful time at the hotel. So much to do. I think it was there my self and another guy went to a Thai Cultural show which was amazing, also a lot of us attending a Thai cooking class where we got to make three dishes and eat them and share them with each other. That same guy who I did the Thai Cultural show with also went to a Muay Thai boxing match where we were joined by two other guys from our group. Later that night most of us went to clubs and 'ladyboy' shows. That's not really what I get into so I opted to head back to the hotel. We flew back to Bangkok for our final couple days. Shane had arranged a champagne party at the nearby W hotel which also was a lot of fun. Afterwards it was off to another cabaret/ladyboy show which due to my ankle I decided not to partake in, but Shane made sure I could and did know how to get back to our hotel. The next day was our final full day including the floating market with Yeli, and our farewell dinner.
Finally, all in all. Besides all the rain, my injury, and illness. I had a great time. Nothing that happened to me had anything to do with Detours. In fact Shane went out of his way, and spent some of his own money, to get me some ankle wraps, lineament, dropped-off and picked-up some laundry, and offered any assistance needed in regards to any medication I needed. Finally on the final day at the time of my departure he was there to see me off.
I would never hesitate to go with Detours again, as I already said, I'm going to Greece in June '17 and hopefully onto Peru and elsewhere later on.

This was my fourth trip with Detours and as always I had an amazing time.
Let me start off by saying I absolutely love Detours! This was my fourth trip with Detours and as always I had an amazing time. This year I traveled to Spain and had the time of my life. James Langill was the tour leader and he was great. All of the cities that we visited were beautiful! My favorite highlights were, Barcelona for it's charm and historic churches, Granada with an entertaining flamenco show, Seville for the Segway tour and Sitges for the gay beach and great nightlife. And of course the best part of the trip, as always was the group of guys that I met and now call my friends. Thank you Detours and Miles Mitchinson for the fantastic memories over the last four years. Looking forward to my next trip with Detours. I've already signed up for August 2017...can't wait!

You won't regret it for a second.
What can I say about my Detours trip? Amazing doesn't begin to describe it! Being my first solo group tour, I was a little apprehensive. Would I be able to do and see the things I wanted to do? Would I get along with everyone? Would I be getting up at some god-awful hour to be crammed onto a bus with every other tour group in the area? I shouldn't have worried. The guys at Detours have put together a tour that is, bar none, the best out there. There are some planned outings, but most of the time you do what you want and the tour leader, in our case Dan, would bend over backwards (sometimes literally) to make it happen. It felt more like taking a vacation with a group of your best friends rather than with a bunch of strangers. I made some great connections and even better friends. We've even started planning a little reunion later this year. If your even considering booking a trip with Detours, DO IT! You won't regret it for a second.

Seriously, go do it... Then go on your trip and have the time of your life.
If you're reading these reviews to gauge whether you should book a trip with Detours or not, stop what you are doing and go pay your deposit. Seriously, go do it. It will be the easiest thing you do all year. Then go on your trip and have the time of your life. The Detours team will do everything they can to make your trip as effortless as possible. You will have some planned activities, but for the most part you are free to do what you want. You'll then regroup for dinner, but even that too is flexible. Detours management and trip leaders are passionate about what they do and you will notice it as you plan for your trip and while you are there. This is not a packed tour bus going from tourist attraction to the next. You will be part of a small group with a common bond and will make new friends for life.
If you are considering Thailand and are unsure of traveling to an Asian country for the first time, set that fear aside and go. Thailand is a beautiful country with beautiful people. It is very easy to "get around" Thailand as most people speak at least some English, enough to get through any transaction.
Did you pay your deposit yet?

Detours was absolutely great... This was a great first experience for me and I definitely plan on going on another trip
I am normally a very anxious person and for me this was my first ever International trip with a travel group I have never used before and with people I have never met before. So I was very anxious but still wanted to challenge myself to do something new and out of the norm for me. I am so glad I did. Detours was absolutely great. Miles was a great contact person and answered all of my questions in a very timely manner. He really understood what my concerns were and made the effort to help put me at ease. Our trip leader Dan was also amazing. He made the effort to help everyone in the group feel welcome and comfortable. Even if someone was kinda "outside" of the other normal talking circles, he would go to that person and strike up a conversation. He was very easy to get to know and went above and beyond to make sure everyone was comfortable and got a chance to enjoy their time there. With detours we did a variety of things while in Spain. We did walking and biking tours in Barcelona, Sitges, Sevilla, and Granada; several cathedral, palaces, and other landmark tours; met together every evening for dinner; and enjoyed the night life in every city. This was a great first experience for me and I definitely plan on going on another trip and I will use these guys again!

I met some terrific people, saw wonderful sights and experienced wonderful moments. Well done.
I found Detours online while looking for gay travel groups. After two gay riverboat cruises I wanted another trip with gay men, but not one that had everything planned. Detours had the right balance – a variety of age groups, singles and couples, and choices of things to do each day. The trip leader Dan was charming and made sure every member of the trip felt welcomed and included. He went out of his way to meet everyone’s needs and interests. He made us feel like a family. I met some terrific people, saw wonderful sights and experienced wonderful moments. Well done.

We just got back from visiting Spain in October 2016 and can not be more thrilled with our trip
My spouse and I wanted to go to Spain and we checked online gay travel sights and found Detours Travel. We did the usual due diligence to see if they offered the type of trip we were looking for. We wanted a organized tour, with gay men but we did not want to have a trip that planned everything. We found the right trip. We just got back from visiting Spain in October , 2016 and can not be more thrilled with our trip. The trip leader, Dan was fantastic. He made sure each and every member of the trip felt welcomed and totally included. Some guys came by themselves, some were young and some were older. Some were celebrating a recent marriage and others like Dave and myself have been together for 26 years. Dan made sure we all had a say in what we did each day. He gave us options and then he would arrange our day. You could go along or go on your own, your choice. The fun did not stop there. Dan found all the hotspots in the cities we visited. He joined us and truly made us feel like a family. We met some terrific people, learned a lot about history and have wonderful lifetime of memories. This trip met all of our expectations. Well done Miles and Dan. Hope to meet again on another one of your adventures.

I'm already looking forward to my next trip with Detours, you have secured a repeat customer.
Overall, the trip for me was fantastic. I dont have any negative comments to provide. I'd say that Dan, our Global Adventure Leader, was fantastic. Dan made the experience fun for everyone. He did a great job of leading us, spending time visitng with everyone to ensure that everyone was having a pleasant time. Whenever a challenge came up, he was quick to respond and make it a non issue. I was really impressed with how at the beginning of each day he provided us a clear vision of the day ahead, and options to consider.. When I travel alone, I spend a lot of time doing restaurant, trip research and coordinating that its almost like another job. The combination of efforts of you and Dan made this vacation absolutly seamless and relaxing. I was able to spend more time enjoying the sights, sounds, culture and food. It was truly a great adventure and well worth the money spent. I'm already looking forward to my next trip with Detours, you both have secured a repeat customer. Thank you for both of your efforts to make this trip so memorable and enjoyable.

I absolutely loved the 12 day Peru trip I took with Detours
I absolutely loved the 12 day Peru trip I took with Detours in September 2016. All aspects of the trip from start to finish were well thought out and planned well. I was really impressed with the customer service received from Detours; they provided information booklets prior to the trip, they helped organized the airport taxi, provided list of recommended activities to do in Lima (starting point of trip), and the tour leader (James) had a goodbye dinner with a few of us before our flights although the trip was officially over. The customer service provided really made me feel safe and comfortable while travelling to a foreign country. The quality of the hotels exceeded my expectations, the hotels were clean, modern, charming and I often felt like I was staying at hidden gems. The pacing of the trip was excellent. Detours really does strive to give their guest flexibility. I really appreciated that not once did I have to wake up super early to catch a bus. I felt like I was truly on vacation and never rushed, I had all the freedom, I could enjoy the morning and sleep in or I could wake up and explore the city for a bit. None of the activities are mandatory, letting the guest decide on their own what they want to do that day. The way Detours is structured gives their guest the ability to do a full day of activities or take it slower and relax. Some of the highlights for me were the Peruvian cooking class, sandboarding and dune buggy in the desert, taking a boat tour to see hundreds of sea lions and penguins and Machu Picchu. Peru is such a great country to visit, Detours does a great job of highlighting some of the best things to see and do within the country. You really get a great mix of experiences, from wandering through the backpacker city of Cusco, to relaxing in the remote sacred valley, exploring the desert and coast near Paracas and exploring the nightlight in downtown Lima. Finally, I cannot give enough praise for our tour leader James. James has the ability to be extremely organized and prepared but always making the group feel like they are on a stress free vacation. On the trip we were faced with some unexpected local protest that prevented our tour group from exploring the sacred valley by car. James had already organized free massages for the group and cooking and pisco making demonstrations through the hotel the night prior to the protest as a compromise to the originally scheduled plans. I think it is excellent customer service that I didn’t have to ask or worry how my trip would be impacted by the local protest, James was able to offer solutions before I even had a chance to worry. Overall, I think Detours is an excellent option for someone who is looking to explore a new country. Detours really made the trip so easy and fun for me! I was able to explore a new country, see some amazing sights, eat at mind blowing places, meet a great group of guys and I didn’t have to organize or plan a single thing.

Our tour to Greece was magnificent! In addition to spending time in Athens, we also visited the islands of Milos, Santorini and Mykonos. So all in all one gets a good feel for mainland and island life (the three islands all offering different charm). A Detours holiday offers a very flexible approach and you can do as much as you desire, from taking guided tours with local experts to simply just lying on the beach. Eating fantastic food (lots of it...) is balanced with several options for physical activity. We visited many restaurants to give you the Greek gastronomy experience. Physical activity involved lots of walking and swimming and kayaking. So, don’t worry about the calories... We were taken to the nightlife options in Athens and on Santorini and Mykonos - great fun! Our tour guide Dan was very efficient and most helpful in taking us through Greece – and clearly had already teased out the good from the bad. Thank you so much! Continue your excellent work!!! We will be back for another Detours experience!

Their trips attract laid back, fun loving and down to earth guys.
Just completed a fun trip in Greece with Detours. Their trips attract laid back, fun loving and down to earth guys. Dan really knows his way around the Greek isles based on a dozen past trips there...very good trip leader. There was never pressure to do things as a group but the things he organized were always compelling...pirate ship in the Santorini caldera, kayaking on the coast of Milos...and of course walking around Athens and seeing the Acropolis up close! I'd go to Greece again. And I'd travel with Detours again.

You and your team really care and take care of us all. I've never been on a trip before where I felt like a friend and not a customer.
After six years of going with other agencies I fully enjoyed all the trips but got tired of the structured aspects of the trips. After doing some cruises/resorts I wanted something more and found you guys. One of my bucket list locals was Costa Rica and I couldn't be happier. I went by myself and ended up getting match-up with a great roommate. I arrived a day early which you took care of with no problem. From our opening there were so many optional excursions to choose from and it didn't matter if you wanted to do it on your own, or if the entire group did it, you and James made it happen I actually lost my ATM/Debit card on the first day and you made me aware not to worry, it will be no problem, and it wasn't. The accommodations were outstanding and by the mid-day of the first day everyone were good friends. I had seen your philosophy about trips and decided if this one was everything it was billed as I would be doing lot more. As it is I am already fully booked and paid for Thailand New year's '17 and Greece June '17. Probably Peru is not too far behind. You and your team really care and take care of us all. I've never been on a trip before where I felt like a friend and not a customer. And you go out of your way to arrange extra night(s) with no problem. Whatever the 'new' destination may be, count me in.

What set this trip apart for me was how well Detours dealt with the unexpected... I'll definitely travel with them again!
I joined Detours for their Peru trip in September 2016. As expected, it was a wonderful trip -- excellent accommodations, delicious food, excellent guides and tours, and a great group of guys -- enhanced by our tour leader's knowledge of life in the country from his time living in Peru. But what set this trip apart for me was how well Detours dealt with the unexpected. Local protests in the country forced the cancellation of one day's excursions due to road blockades in the Sacred Valley. (Yes, we all realized the irony that our Detours tour was experiencing a detour!) While our Detours tour leader, James, was arranging alternate plans, one of our tour members fell ill and required medical assistance (and the nearest doctor was in another town). Without missing a beat, James worked with our hotel to arrange activities for the group while accompanying our comrade to the doctor (literally clearing rocks and tree stumps out of the road so that the taxi could get through!) We ended up having a great day exploring Yucay and enjoying a complimentary massage plus special programs such as a bartending class and a cooking demonstration at the hotel, and our tour-mate got the medicine he needed and fully recovered in time for the continuation of our trip. What at first looked like a day of disappointment ended up being one of the best days of the trip! I highly recommend Detours. I'll definitely travel with them again!

Best two weeks of my year and one of the most memorable trips that I've taken!
Best two weeks of my year and one of the most memorable trips that I've taken! Fun itinerary with a good variety of activities and locales. We got to see a lot without feeling rushed, and there were plenty of chances to strike out and do your own thing if you felt like it. Though, our large group got along well and did most excursions and meals together. I feel fortunate to have met such a great group of guys. Hotel accommodations were comfortable and well located. James was awesome as our tour group leader! Not only did he do a great job with logistics, he also was fun to hang out with and took the time to get to know each of us. An amazing trip all around.

I'll carry the memories of this trip forever. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Spain was fantastic and Detours put together a well-organized, thoroughly enjoyable tour. The trip flew by but by the end of it I felt like I'd known the great guys in my group forever. James is a fantastic leader. I'll carry the memories of this trip forever. Can't recommend it highly enough. I'm pretty sure I'll be a repeat customer.

...you can trust to deliver the best value for your money and a high quality vacation experience that will leave you with a lifetime of memories
Seldom do I feel compelled to write reviews but after our vacation to Thailand with Detours Travel and our guide Miles Mitchinson, I decided I wanted to share our wonderful experiences with anyone who maybe interested in an adventure of a lifetime. This is our first vacation that we have been apart of a group while traveling outside the U.S. and it left a favorable impression on us, so much so, that we are now planning our next vacation to Spain with Detour Travels. We discovered Detour Travels while researching an Asian vacation destination. From beginning to the end of our trip, Miles Mitchinson was a consummate travel guide. His professionalism, timeliness, and helpful suggestions to our questions before our trip, left us feeling confident that we had made the right decision to partake in a group travel experience. While on our tour he continued to impress us with his knowledge of the Thai culture and his ability to speak the Thai language. If Miles did not know the answer to your question(s) he would go out of his way to get you an answer. He was instrumental in making special arrangements for us outside of the daily itinerary (like a tattoo), which contributed to our personal wants and desires during our trip. These qualities among many others shined through Miles personality and truly contributed to a fantastic memorable vacation. So, if your wanting to explore the world, Detour Travels is the company you can trust to deliver the best value for your money and a high quality vacation experience that will leave you with a lifetime of memories that you will always carry with you. Hats off to Detour Travels and Miles Mitchinson for setting the bar in providing exceptional, high quality travel experiences to the gay community. Cheers and happy travels! Loren and Jeff

I have never met anyone who so perfectly embodies the ideal of what hospitality is supposed to be about. On a 10 point scale: 20.
You were very accommodating of my last minute reservation, welcoming and helpful on the front end. I wasn't sure I wanted to do a group trip and you reeled me in beautifully for which I am deeply thankful because it was awesome. James was incredible on the trip. He walked the perfect line between bringing us together as a group and letting us all be ourselves. Super sense of humour, fun to be around, patient, genuinely found a way to connect with everyone, kept everything on track with quiet ease. I have never met anyone who so perfectly embodies the ideal of what hospitality is supposed to be about. He is also just a lovely soul. On a 10 point scale: 20. Thank you for a really great time!

One of the big differences was that it was apparent that you really care about and get to know your customers. Bravo!
Wanted you to know that I very much enjoyed the trip. You did a fantastic job of organizing this trip. From the start, I was very impressed with your website and how you described your philosophy of travel. James was a very nurturing, thoughtful, and enthusiastic trip leader. He made us feel so welcome from the start, and we knew we could count on him. I have done many other organized gay vacations -- (company names removed out of respect). One of the big differences was that it was apparent that you really care about and get to know your customers. Bravo!

12 Days in Peru - (July 26, 2016)
This trip exceeded all of my expectations and then some.
The was my first "group tour" type of vacation and it certainly will not be my last with Detours Travel. Peru was my adventure, and I can't say enough of how much of a perfect vacation it was. The groups are kept small which allows for more freedom during the excursions as I never felt like there was a stop watch timing us everywhere we went. Plenty of options were given as far as daily activities and eating options as Miles new all the hidden jewels. At every turn there was a new surprise. That may be in part due to the perfect timing our charming trip leader Miles had. I never worried about anything and I just let the adventure unfold and just left it up to him. Everything was perfectly planned out. This trip exceeded all of my expectations and then some. Detours sets the standard for small group tours. They have the experience and knowledge to lead you on an unforgettable experience!!!

To say the trips are memorable is a huge understatement
AMAZING! I just got home from 12 days in Peru and have to say it was an incredible experience. This was my second trip with Detours, last year I went to Costa Rica, and Miles Mitchinson never ceases to impress. To say the trips are memorable is a huge understatement. Whether you enjoy shopping, eating great food, touring incredible sites, relaxing at top resorts or living like one of the locals...there is something for everyone. I have taken two trips with Detours and within hours of getting home, I am already planning the next one. If you are looking for a truly memorable experience, choose Detours!

The group was fantastic. Highly recommend these guys.
I made a last minute decision to join their tour to Greece. I booked it Monday and left on Thursday. I had no idea what to expect beyond some of the things I read in reviews and their social media accounts...but I went for it. It was exactly what I needed. I got a vacation that was fully planned for, but nothing was fully scripted. We had the ability to dictate what we did on a daily basis, but our guide had plenty of options for us to pick from. The group was fantastic. A really fun group of guys. Our trip guide, Dan, was outstanding. He knows what he's doing. He's loved by every vendor in every city and town we went to. Highly recommend these guys.

How soon can I go on another one?
Put your fears to rest. This group can do no wrong! I was a little hesitant signing up my husband and I on a trip to Greece for our 23rd anniversary. The reviews (all of them) seemed too good to be true. Now that the trip is complete, I can safely say that they are absolutely 100% correct. I loved our tour, our tour guide, and every single one of the brand new friends I met on this trip. It was incredible. I travel quite a bit and have been on organized tours before. This one surpasses them all and just leaves you wanting more. Dan was the perfect host as he was friendly, attentive, and considerate of all the different personalities in the group. When my husband got heat stroke he immediately offered to go into town and pick up some PowerAde so he wouldn't become dehydrated. Also as we ate dinner one night down by the water it got a little chilly. Dan walked back to the hotel and grabbed his entire wardrobe to share with us. Is this guy for real? He was just that wonderful. When I travel to new locations I have to do tons of research, plan out all the details, and get everything in order weeks before I go. I was a wee bit stressed when Miles suggested I let all that go and allow his company to take care of those details. After 63 frantic emails, I decided to relax and go with the flow. So glad I did. Dan provided suggestions for activities the night before to the entire group and allowed us to pick. Most of the time we were all excited to hang out with each other and opted for group activities, but it was nice to know there were other ideas available if we wanted something more specific. We were the only couple out of the group of 11 guys from all over the world. Thankfully the personalities clicked right away and there was never any animosities or trouble for the entire trip. I think Dan had a lot to do with keeping our little group running. He was constantly leading conversations, asking questions, and making sure all of us were interacting. I was surprised with how quickly we passed from awkward strangers to comfortable friends. If I had to say an exact moment it was by the time we walked from our meeting at the hotel to the Rooster bar on our first night. By then we were already joking and laughing and picking out nicknames for each other. Detours has done a excellent job creating this tour company. How soon can I go on another one?

I Thank YOU for creating a great travel company for our community.
I'll start off by saying a BIG THANK YOU to DAN and Detours! The Greece trip is/was beyond my expectations! From day one to day twelve of the trip, I didn't have to worry about anything or needed to ask about what to do or see, Dan provided or was with us the whole way. He always gave everyone an option. Dan did an amazing job with preparing, planning and making sure everyone and everything were in order and accounted for on all our daily excursions. He's always available and is able to accommodate any requests from our group. He welcomed me and everyone with open arms. He started as our tour guide on day 1 and by day 12 an incredible FRIEND in my eyes.
I love many things about this trip, from kayaking/snorkeling in Milos, the morning runs on the beach, the group lunches/dinners, the hikes and above all, the people in our group. As we all have similarities, it's the uniqueness of each individual which make a group of 12 guys special. A day after the trip and I am missing the 12-day routines and the friends that I made in Greece. Two biggest things I've learned from this trip through Dan is spontaneity and humanity. Will definitely be on another Detours trip again as some of us have started our discussion on which trip we want to do next with each others (Peru, Costa Rica, South Africa etc. etc. etc.). You and the Detours family have a special and incredible adventure travel company. I Thank YOU for creating a great travel company for our community.

This was a trip of a life time and I can't wait for my next Detours adventure!!
Just returned from the 12 day trip to Greece and it surpassed every one of my expectations.
In the planning phase of the trip, Miles from Detours was so accessible and helpful. He quickly and efficiently answered all my questions and concerns.
Once arrived, I was greeted by our amazing tour leader Dan Clarke. From the first minutes at the hotel, Dan's positive energy and helpful nature reassured any hesitations I had. From there, I met the rest of our great group and we started our adventure.
Dan organized EVERYTHING and ensured incredibly smooth transitions throughout our itinerary. He always presented options to the group which meant that all needs and preferences were considered. He brought us to secret hidden places and organized private tours and activities that allowed us to experience a side of Greece that most never will. From the kayaking and cliff jumping in Milos, to the breathtaking hikes and a private pirate ship in Santorini and the special sunsets in Mykonos...the list could go on and on. This was a trip of a life time and I can't wait for my next Detours adventure!!

We have made friends for life with Detours! It was very difficult to say goodbye to everyone at the end of the 2 weeks
Traveling to Spain with Detours was an amazing travel experience for my husband and I. I was a bit hesitant at first to travel with a group of strangers, but after the 1st day together everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. Miles and James were incredible trip leaders and made sure that everyone was enjoying themselves at all times. I loved that they showed us many things that typical tourists wouldn't know of or get to experience. We have made friends for life with Detours! It was very difficult to say goodbye to everyone at the end of the 2 weeks, but know that we will be traveling with Detours many times in the future! Detours is the only way to travel to have fun seeing the world and connecting with amazing friends around the globe! South Africa is our next destination with Detours in Feb 2016!!

Two thumbs for sure. I highly recommend this tour company.
The Detours Gay Tour Group to Spain was the best trip experience I've had in my life. Since this was my first visit to Spain and Europe with a gay tour group, I was a bit nervous and did not know what to expect. That all changed once I meet the fabulous Miles and James and the other cool guys in the group. Everybody was awesome and I did like the fact it was a smaller group. I felt more like I was part of a big happy gay family.
Detours did a great job with the locations we visited and restaurants. From now on, I will start to book my vacations with Detours. Two thumbs for sure. I highly recommend this tour company.

Just completed my third trip and once again, I simply don’t have enough words to describe the fantastic experience
Just completed my third trip and once again, I simply don’t have enough words to describe the fantastic experience gained by traveling with Detours. Having completed the Costa Rica and the Greece trips in prior years, I felt optimistic about romping around Spain with this group, and of course, they did not disappoint. Miles and his trip leader, James built an awesome itinerary for 12 days, mixing different flavors for the average tourist but more importantly providing a more intimate experience of Spain, so unique that you’ll definitely appreciate your visit more. Whether it’s joining in on a flamenco performance in Granada or laying out on the beaches of Sitges or being amazed at the colorful interior of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain is just stunning. And let’s not forget the Spanish men!!! Yes…the rumors are true!!! They are gorgeous!!! =) But the real bonus is the lifelong friendships made. I still communicate with the people I met in Costa Rica and some of us have continued to travel together in Greece and now Spain. I totally support this company and its vision and I plan to continue traveling with Miles and his team for as long as I can.

I would rate this trip a 10+
I would rate this trip a 10+. Dan was exceptional, very charismatic, efficient and a thirst for adventure. Any questions asked, Dan would make you feel like you’re the most important person in the group and if he didn’t know the answer he would get it for you.
The order of the islands visited and the time spent at each one was well planned. Don’t change a thing. Milos was unique starting with the ATV’s. The first ten minutes was almost intoxicating and seeing the caravan driven by my gay brothers was heartwarming. The Greek people are friendly but at Milos they’re over the top. I enjoyed asking a waitress about a certain dish and how it was prepared. She made it sound like a love story blending of food, it sound so erotic I ordered it. Kayaking was another high followed by cliff jumping. Once again Dan outperformed himself by specialty diving, a surprise to us all. Mike (the kayak guide) went beyond the call of duty by bringing a lunch prepared by his family and also producing a short film of the group. I like the guy. Santorini was special in another way. Watching the sunset from the highest peak of the island, another day watching it set from the steps (that go from the top of the cliff to the bottom) while enjoying wine that Dan brought. The boat ride to the volcano crater was something you don’t do very often. Nude swimming from the pirate boat made lasting memories. Meeting Mike and his mother and dining outside his store had an atmosphere all its own. Of course Mykonos was my favorite island. The piano bar was alive, the pianist and vocalist were very entertaining and first class. ‘'JACKIE-O” was my favorite! The energy flowing was unbelievable. Upon returning to Athens our last meal together was at the 360o restaurant. How appropriate for our last gathering to be at a location where we can watch the lighting of the Acropolis. This restaurant also contained energy but it was a subdued energy to be enjoyed.
All the hotels were cozy to excellent. The service good and the people friendly. As for the restaurants, ooooooh those restaurants. So flawless, so well situated the food so good. I can’t praise them enough. I have so many memories, not just of the adventure but of conversations with people from different countries.

I highly recommend Detours for the experience they provide at a great value.
I just finished the tour of Greece and had a great experience.
I LOVE the tour format, with groups no larger than 15. I was traveling with a friend but would be comfortable traveling alone. There is just the right amount of structure, but plenty of room to improvise and do your own thing. You can opt in or out.
Our tour leader, Dan, was fantastic. Dan was a good communicator, was helpful, and accessible all the time. And a good problem solver - for example, when we were on Mykonos about to board a bus to return to the hotel from the beach, the public bus was too full to take everyone and before we knew it Dan had lined up a plan "B" and had arranged alternate transportation.
I thought this tour to Greece was paced well - it began and ended in Athens (guided walking tour ended with a visit to the Acropolis - i recommend visiting the Acropolis museum). Milos was laid back, with time to explore (loved the Kayaking). Santorini had amazing scenery and a memorable boat ride at sunset. Then Mykonos was about the beaches, bars and partying! (plus a half day guided tour of Delos was great)
I highly recommend Detours for the experience they provide at a great value.

There are not enough good adjectives to express the wonder of this very special trip, the people I traveled with or the memories I will carry for the rest of my life.
Oh where to begin!?! For my 4th trip with Detours, I was on the very first Spain Adventure hosted by the Ever Effervescent Miles, the Bohemian Dan and the Precocious James. Despite the weather, it was an amazing trek through the best that Spain has to offer. Barcelona with it's Sagrada Familia, Granada and the Alhambra fortress, to Seville and the Alcazar and finally Sitges with the most amusing "Gay Square". This was a surprising journey with the most congenially compatible group of guys I've traveled with yet. The accommodations lived up the the standards set by previous Detours trips and the food was nothing short of stellar. Tapas bars to Cave dinning, all were culinary delights! I had never experienced Flamenco Dancing before, but was enthralled. A certain member of our group did us all proud as he joined in! There are not enough good adjectives to express the wonder of this very special trip, the people I traveled with or the memories I will carry for the rest of my life. If Spain is on your bucket list, this is the trip for you! If it's not, do it anyway! You will not be disappointed.

Looking forward to the next adventure with Detours!
The maiden voyage to Spain with Detours—led by the charming Miles, the free-spirit Dan, and the precocious James. Don’t be fooled this isn’t like any tour you’ve been on—there is an outline of an itinerary that is flexible and can be custom to your interests. Learn the basics of tapas, be wow’d by flamenco dancers, hit up a local gay bar, discover the architecture of the past, enjoy a Tinto De Verano while watching the sunset atop the Metropol Parasol or take a dip in the Mediterranean. #EndlessPossibilities. The lodging was always comfortable and safe. Most of us on this trip were acquainted from previous trips; however, new faces were easy to get to know. Previously, I have been on the Thailand trip with Miles, and the Peru trip with Miles and Dan. Looking forward to the next adventure with Detours!
